My friend bought a house and inherited a Niles multiroom audio set up. There is a Marantz reciever and a pair of MA500 monoblock amps that feed into the Niles speaker selector.
She said it was working, but then blew the fuses. I replaced the fuses, checked continuity on all the speaker wires to make sure there wasn't a short in one of the runs, and eased the input volume up. It worked at low to reasonable volumes but once you got above a certain level it started to cut in and out on both amps. I turned it off and it was fine, turned it on again to troubleshoot and after cutting in and out for another few seconds it blew the fuses again.
Any idea where to begin troubleshooting this? I'm dubious about it being internal to the amps since it is happening on both, so there is a real chance some part of the Niles audio setup is wired incorrectly...the wires were a rats nest of wire nuts, I tried to clean it up as much as I knew how.
I'm an electronics hobbiest that knows my way around a soldering station and multimeter, but not overly familiar with audio setups such as this, and am interested in guidance on which direction I need to be troubleshooting...the input, the output, or internal to the amps. If I need to provide more details to answer this question, I'm happy to.

Followup: I just confirmed that she is completely unfamiliar with the Niles Speaker Selector and sometimes hits the buttons to see what they do, so it is likely she has been running multiple zones without the protection enabled. Going to go tape down the protection button next time I'm over there.
How likely is this to be the issue, and if I ensure correct speaker selection is done in the future, is there likely to have been any damage done to the amps?
