OK guys, you may have seen a couple other threads asking questions about this project...but from now on, it all goes in here.
I've got most of the materials. I've ordered the wine racks. I've ordered the first test speakers, to make sure theyre what I want. And I think I've found a wine bottle that is the correct diameter. All I can do now is wait...
AND ask some questions. First...what type of stuffing do you recommend? The volume of the bottle is ~1.5 L. The speakers I'm testing are the Tang Band W3-879SC. I anticipate crossing them over to a sub at around 150-250 Hz (Maybe around 200 due to the response curve? though i would dearly appreciate expert advice with this number). The bottles will be sealed, but by a cork (which is kinda sorta porous but not enough I don't think to effect the type of stuffing).
And the other question: What do you guys recommend I place in between the speaker rim and bottle where I attach it. I will be using Lexel adhesive, because it dries clear. It is "super-elastic". I expect that to help in terms of absorbing some of the basket's vibrations. But is there anything else you would add?
Thanks!
Matt

Hah yea I saw that. Mine won't cost quite as much tho 😛
And won't look so over the top. I'm going for more of a class feel.

Alrighty...
STEP 1: THE BOTTLE
Here she is, the one I think will work. But I can't be sure until the speakers arrive (estimated friday). It's a red wine bottle. But if I were to simply paint the inside with white paint like I did with my last one, it would look like a white wine bottle. I think I'm gonna have to buy some dark red paint from Home Depot...I want it to look like a red wine bottle, I think that will go better with the iron rack and black speakers.
The edges look parallel in the picture, but they're not. It's hard to tell, but this is one of those bottles that expands from the bottom before contracting again at the top. I originally wanted the ones that have a relatively short region of straight edges and then taper gently towards the top. I don't know what they're called. But on second thought, could this expanding type bottle be good to reduce standing waves?
Ok, here are the pics.

any ideas on stuffing guys? I've searched around but it seems the answer is different for each speaker.
the rack came today...looks great!
here is a pic of the rack with the four bottles, all cut, placed in it.
the rack only touches the wine bottle at four points. to stop the circular version of standing waves that bottles can have (the ringing when you flick a wine glass), I think i should touch at more places than four points (more like a line). So I might need to buy some foam padding, cut it into the right shape, and paint it black.
Any suggestions on where to get this type of padding? local art supply store?

also, I need your advice on painting.
attached is a scrap bottle I used. the white paint makes this red wine bottle look pretty nicely like a white wine bottle. I like the color, though I was thinking of making them look like red wine bottles (seems a little classier).
I bought burgundy colored paint, but it looks way too red. Red wine bottles rarely look red because of the color and the glass and the density of the liquid...they almost always end up looking black.
So right now I'm leaning towards just painting the inside black. What do you guys think?

with a simple glass cutter available at any hardware or arts and crafts store.
takes some practice though

Hi Shpoop,
Nice project!
You have to supply dimensions for your bottles; otherwise its impossible to give you a recommendation concerning a specific driver and the amount of stuffing needed or what the difference would be if you vary densities and their total weights.
For optimum result the stuffing may also be applied at different locations in the bottle.
As a good approximation, post the dimensions of your bottles labelled with letters in the attached picture and you might get some response form this forum.

cool. The speaker and the jar don't look to be the same diameter...are they>
if not, how did you fit them?

ok guys. I'm gonna start a new thread when theyre done, just because its hard to get people back when you cant edit the titles. but until theyre finished, ill post the progress pics here.
no scoffing at my lack of expensive equipment allowed!
Here are the drivers lined up with their bottles. I was thrilled to find out that the place I made the cut and the frame of the drivers were exactly the same diameter!
Here they are again, with wires kinda in place. shows the two groups of series connections.
Here they are with the stuffing in, and me getting ready to apply the glue.
Here they are letting glue set. Tape is so glue doesnt come through screw holes, which I will paint later.
Testing them to make sure nothing came loose in all the commotion. They sounded great, even balancing in a glass!
Now to really let the glue set. Hope this doesn't hurt the surrounds too much! Lemme know ASAP if it is a realllly bad idea, so I can take the weights off now.
now I wait. I dare say these will be the sexiest speakers ever!

ooooh baby. I have to wait until all the glue totally dries to paint the seams and repaint the wires, but its looking sexxxxxxy.
Sounds great too! Underpowered now, but I'm being careful not to clip it. Gonna wait until the glue sets to move it to the bigger amp.

No, they aren’t, you have to make a circular baffle (of glass) instead of the jar lid.cool. The speaker and the jar don't look to be the same diameter...are they if not, how did you fit them?
Another hint, 4 drivers will absolutely have really bad dispersion characteristics over about lambda = 2960 Hz even if the c-c distance is minimum.
Cross over to a T driver <= 1480 Hz 12 dB/octave filter or with a steeper filter if closer to 3kHz.
Test with a 1.5” driver mounted as in the submitted picture, placed as close as possible near the middle of the array, maybe in a suitable wine glass?
With stuffed1.5 L volume only, the Qtc will be about 0.8 at f-3dB = 128 Hz.
Tip;If higher power is needed at fc, use no bottle cork and trim the whole volume to a Damped-Box, Damped-Vent (Aperiodic) System.
