Help! I acquired this nakamichi soundspace 7 the other day and everything works but the cd player (multidisk musicbank). The person I got it from didn't even know there was a cd changer in there its so hidden away.
I am attaching a few pictures. You can see that when the cd player is turned on track "S" is selected?
I opened it up and managed to remove a cd that was in there but still nothing moves or even tries to move when you turn the cd player part on except if you manually move the laser part it will return to the center.
I contacted the nakamichi repair people last week and haven't heard back - willing to have it serviced but wonder if anyone is familiar with nak cd players to give me a few tips. Seems like there must be a simple way to reset the tray in the changer.

Although it's been too long since I've worked on any of them to give you any specific advice on this one, I am quite familiar with the SoundSpace7(the only SoundSpace model I would personally own). It is essentially a model CD Player 3 installed into a relatively decent receiver unit. Although these commonly have problems with one or more of the three belts used, it sounds like yours is not even trying to run, which suggests that the primary fault is a power supply issue. So, if you are reasonably handy & know how to use a soldering iron properly, the basic idea is to examine the solder connections of any heat-generating components(i.e., attached to heatsinks or making the circuit board under the component heat-discolored) and re-solder any that appear to be cracked or otherwise suspect. Doing this will give you, I would say, a 60-70 percent chance of getting the changer running again(although you will still likely need to replace at least the tray drive belt).

Thanks Stephen. Encouraging words. I REALLY love the design of this unit (similar my old faithful radio one that i keep in my office) and i think the tuner sounds really pretty darn good.
Mo motors appear to turn when I do anything and the belts seem to be intact and good, so looking for a power issue must be the trick.
I'll poke around some more and if I can't get it working it would be worth sending out for repairs. This was a real work of art IMO.

I know this is a very old post. Just like to add some more information about Sound Space 7. SS7 went on sale for $999 at in 1992. Due to the very high price tag, it did not sell well at all because most people bought the smaller and cheaper ($599) Sound Space 5. I bought and still own SS7 because it sounded a lot more high end than its smaller counterpart. The CD tray was the weak link and eventually could not open while the CD in it still played.
The 30WPC amplifier is of quality product. While not powerful it did power Maggie SMGA to adequate level with nice sound stage and clarity. The speakers, surprisingly, speak quality as well. Powered by my EL84 SET amp, I prefer them to a pair EPOS M5s which are also well regarded. SS7 was designed to perform in a small space and it does a great job at it. I have kept them since 1992. I would say the speakers stood the test of time and still are being used in my home office daily.
