So my AT 440mla stylus met the hands of my three year old and was bent a good deal. I tried to gently nudge it back in line but now the thing doesn't even track.
At risk of ruining my records, I figured I'd replace the stylus, pronto.
Unfortunately the replacement styli are $30-70 more than I paid for the whole cartridge!
What would be a suitable replacement under $200? TT is an AR XA with a stock arm and generic DJ style headshell.
FWIW I liked the AT 440 but found it a bit sibilant.

The internet seems to really like the new-ish AT-VM95ML. MSRP is under $200 US.
2M Red is a dog BTW.🙂

Ortofon 2M Red would be suitable at 1.8g. Or else the Audio-Technica AT-VM95e at 2.0g.
Realign the arm with the AR supplied gauge before use.

Unfortunately, the alignment gauge supplied with the AR will no longer work properly.
The original head shell fixes the position of the cartridge in the shell. Replacements will not,
so the arm cannot be adjusted accurately with the AR overhang gauge.

With care, it threads on, but there's some rotation to the headshell if i'm not careful.
The plastic threads on the original headshell blew out. I should really get something proper like a Mayware, etc.

I'm surprised a generic DJ-style headshell works on that deck.
Something very close to the AT-VM95ML is the AT3600, which is a bargain cart very similar to the AT95 series, and often favourabley compared to other carts costing many hundreds $$ more. Because it's an OEM, it can be found online for ~$25, but don't let that put you off, it's doesn't sound like a budge cart. It would be particularly good for you, as it's affordable to replace while your youngster is growing up. Many have put better quality styli to improve performance more.
