New Guy Needs Help With Onkyo DX-C390 CD Changer

My Dad recently purchased an Onkyo DX-C390 6-disk changer from a local Goodwill store.

When we first got the unit, it initially didn't pick up the disc, but I opened the tray and closed it again and it read the disc and played just fine. I moved it to where it would be used and it crapped out again. It took several minutes of repeatedly loading and reloading a disc into the unit before it finally read and started playing again. It played, but it took a good 5 seconds for it to display the disc information. Once I hit play, it took about that long for the disc to start playing. However, now it won't read a disc at all. I put my ear to the player and listened. I don't ever hear the squeaky sound the laser makes when it's going to play the disc. All I hear now are 3 tiny clicks and then the carousel rotates looking for the next disc.

I am assuming it's the laser pickup that's gone out. I've been told that if the laser can't establish that initial focus lock, the disc won't even spin up or anything. I don't have an oscilloscope, but I have purchased just the laser pickup assembly, which is a Sony KSS-213C. Can the laser be calibrated accurately to where it will play properly without a scope? If so, how do I do it?

I'm not familiar with the player, however the first things to check are that any loading operations complete fully... usual cause of that not happening would be stretched belts. As you hear "3 clicks" I don't really suspect that is happening though. Those 3 clicks may well be the lens trying to find focus (the focus search routine moves the lens up and down 3 times and that can be audible.)

Have you cleaned the lens on the pickup ?

The KSS213 should work OK without any calibration, although it may not be optimum. Remember to remove any shorting link (unsolder it) on the pickup after having fitted it.

I read about that shorting link. That protects the unit from ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) damage during transit. I'll be sure to remove that excess solder before installing the unit.

I have indeed cleaned the lens. I finally got a lens-cleaning disc to run a few days back and it still failed.
 
My cousin was telling me that this Sony laser is a holographic as opposed to a grated. It's a split-beam. 1 beam reads the disc and the other two are your e-f balance (tracking). I'm slowly but surely learning as I go. The old brain's rusty. 🙂
