Right I need some help as I'm at a loss with my new TV. I now have brilliant picture quality and rubbish sound!
My old sammy used to connect to my amp via headphone jack and sounded brilliant.
New UHD TV only has optical out. I've tried a couple of dacs and the sound is harsh and flat like almost no bass!
Also I have noticed I need to turn my amp up to max just to get a 1/2 decent volume out of it...so maybe I should try a pre amp too?
Also the other epic pain in the butt is when you use optical out you have no volume control and my amp is hand built without remote volume pot....
any suggestions to help end my tv woes?

Have you checked the TV audio settings to make sure it doesn't send multichannel audio over the optical output?
Try an HDMI ARC to analogue audio converter, theoretically that should at least solve the problem with the volume control. Mind you, I tried that with a Marmitek Connect AE14 HDMI 4K audio extractor and a Samsung UE40KU6400 television and I couldn't get it to work at all (didn't get any audio out whatsoever).
Already tired that too....

There are posts online suggesting that the Dolby Digital Audio Compression feature is active even if the unit is set to output PCM mode. Suggestion is to change the setting to line level from RF?
Hi Onis_uk,
If nothing else works then hack-it by disconnecting internal speakers and build yourself line level adapter with 4 resistors only... you can always return to original setup...
Please take a look at this web page: Speaker signal to line level
But first measure with multimeter if ground wires for speakers are shared - if not then you will need transformer isolation before connecting to your pre-amp set-up!
Very important description from the web:
"The circuit is designed to work with typical HIFI amplifiers where negative speaker connector (black) is connected to amplifier ground. Be careful here because some modern amps have both terminals actively driven. Connecting either one to a common reference could cause the output stage to smoke. "

I've even done that too........
found the connector online, lucky they just used a standard jst...audio is better but much quieter on the rh channel... so still not right.
its so frustrating!

How would I do this?! i only have PCM and bitstream as output selections...

I would try to find the PDF version of the TV manual online and search in it for audio compression or dynamic volume.

I assume you put the TV volume to max? Or maybe you need to lower it depending on the input level requirement of your amp.
Which model Samsung do you have ? I have a UE55KU6000 and it is fine on optical out into the Audiolab M-DAC+

with the yellow connector connected to the board is its red connector on the far right as is shown with the white connector ?

Say what now.........?! The yellow connector was the OEM plug to the speakers, the white one is the one i replaced it with so i could connect the high to low level filter without damaging anything.
I understood that the white plug was replacing the yellow plug. But because the sequence of the wires in the two plugs is not the same in the photo, my question was really is the yellow plug as shown in the photo
upside down from the way it would be plugged into its socket. I suppose it is but not familiar enough with those plugs to know that.

the colours are irrelevant, i just used to pinouts diagram on the board to know which one was r+- and r+- ...
There is a dac with 30 day full refund if purchased directly from their online store.
I have one - audioengine D1 - has a volume control with 2.0 volts rms max output. Powered by usb, with optical input & R+L RCA outputs. Worked with my Samsung Tv optical out (PCM only) although using it now with a pc. Usually $169 wherever sold.
