So my friend bought this Pioneer AVH-2300DVD from a guy on craigslist.
The guy had it hooked up in his car to show him that it worked, but my friend did not ask to see USB or CD. He took the guys word which was a mistake.
It was in a 2006 trailblazer so he got the PAC interface for $100 and I hooked it all up for him today.
Radio works and sounds great.
When you put a cd in, there is extremely low audio. When you turn it to max volume, you can hear the song but it's as audible as a whisper.
The USB behaves the same way.
The AUX works fine.
He really wants the USB functionality.
If anybody has any suggestions as to what could be wrong inside the head unit, I can replace whatever is broken. I just do not know where or what to look for as I have never troubleshooted a car stereo but I can use a multimeter and am good with replacing parts on a circuit board.
Any help would be appreciated.

Many of the Pioneer head units have a Source Level Adjustment. This allows you to set the relative level of the various sources (except for FM). Download the manual. It's mentioned in section 13 and likely other sections.

I tinkered with that with no luck. I went through all the options and could not find anything.
As I said at full volume it is a whisper. I am thinking it is a physical problem on the board.
Did you download the manual and read all of the sections regarding the SLA feature?
Yeah I downloaded the manual last night to read over some of the troubleshooting tips they have to see if maybe I missed something. Unfortunately I did not.
On this unit when you go into settings and click on the source level adjuster it goes from -4 to 4 and it's 0 by default. At any level the sound is not there. I have used pioneers with the SLA in the past and even at default it had sound.
If you have the levels set to 0 or if the level controls make no difference, I'd agree that the head unit is likely defective.

Do you or anybody else know of a good pioneer repair person?
Contact Pioneer customer support and tell them that you need a local warranty repair center. It won't be covered under warranty but the authorized repair centers will likely already have all of the manuals and service bulletins. That should reduce the wait time.
If the head unit has a reset button, you could try resetting it as a last resort. It shouldn't be any different from disconnecting it for a few minutes but you should at least try it.
