The reason I asked about the volume control is the fact that I knew Eddie Fincham rather well. I serviced his products in Norway, and I visited him in his workshop in the UK.

He had an Indian apprentice, Richard, who did some work for him, amongst other a IR remote control circuit. It consisted of a PIC chip and a mosfet driver. At that time I also serviced Arcam, and I furnished him with a three button remote controller especially made for the Arcam Alpha 8 amp. I return he allowed me to use his remote controller in my preamps. I made my own layout and have used ever since.

My reason for bringing out this story is that in case of a defective volume control I’m most likely the only one who can still supply the preprogrammed PIC chip.

In closing I will elevate Eddie Fincham as being a proper stick bearer for quality audio products and a fine English gentleman to booth.

I enclose a few pictures related to this.

Hi! Ok Interesting!

Yes, so it's the volume control apparently. I've taken it away from the workshop because they were not able to find someone to help with another unit. They were looking for someone to provide a new "volume unit"

Essentially, next steps on my side is my friend is going to just do some tests and we can establish the true issue with the control, the workshop said distortion, but I want to hear it myself first.

Who is They and what does a GZ34 rectifier tube have to do with volume?

What's going on with the amp?
Hi - sorry. Two separate threads in one.

The Amp - The issue is that whilst at the workshop, they were refitting a recoiled transformer. They then told me they were having issues with the volume control which was providing distortion.

The Tubes - I have a second mono block which they changed the tubes to be the Mullards. They claimed that the ones already in there weren't the right ones which I find hard t believe as I bought it from a reputable audiophile in the UK who had bought them brand new. So I was keen to understand if the Mullard GZ34's were right for this amp more generally.

It's also worth noting, there is no remote control for these units? Or at least...I don't have one?

In post 11 you mention the use of a GZ34 which is a rectifier valve used in the power supply of a valve amps,

I do not think your mono block uses valve rectification and i cannot see any signs of a GZ34 in the images . Your monobloc's from the data i can see run four EL34 which is a pentode power output valve, this is a little confusing, but possibly a simple typo?

As to a volume control, that should be a relatively simple fix for a decent repair shop.

Hi Raymond,

Thanks for the post. The overarching sentiment of these messages is that I feel this workshop was somewhat screwing me over and not doing a great job.

1. Valves/Tubes - So they've changed the valves on my other mono block amp to the Mullard GZ34, this one still has the original ones as they hadn't got around to changing this. Hence the photos. Do you think the Mullards are the wrong valves for this?

2. Volume control. We are going to open this up and test with a friend. I'm hoping we can get a quick sense of the issue. Will send images of this opened up for you to have a look at.

Really appreciate the time and response.

Any decent EL34 valve should work well, however new replacement EL34 may not be an exact match of the original design. By buying valves under the Mullard brand they should be a close facsimile, and therefore shouldn't be an issue.

I am sure your friend will sort out the volume control aspect.
