Hey everyone I have an old combo guitar amp that I still use once and a while the amp still seems to work fine but one of the speakers is bad. It has a couple of 12" scorpions from what I can see. The rear of the amp has a 1/4 jack that is wired to the 2 speakers and there are 2 jacks to plug them into 2 ohm or 4 ohm I'm guessing you use the one that your speakers end up being? Hello. In Argentina, my country, there are some specialists that repaire the coil damaged (rewind or replace). So, you can conserve the original quality of the speaker´s cone at very low cost.
For sure, it's a decent amp.
If you don't want to spend the money on new Celestions, you could find some 12" AlNiCo Jensen's out of an old Magnavox record console.
The power handling of the Jensens will be a little light, similar to a Greenback, 25ish watts, although they will be very efficient so loudness won't be a problem.

I Had one back in the 80's when they had first came out, But it had got stolen.
Awesome amp !!
I had it for about two years.
I had went through two of the speakers one at time while it was under warranty.
But the shop never found out why.
As it turned out, there was a molex connector that I found on the board that was bad causing the amp to oscillate at a higher frequency higher than you could hear and this was what was causing the voice coils to burn up on two separate incidences.
I tried every thing to fix the connector and nothing worked,So I cut it off and soldered it directly to the board and I never had a problem with it after that.
So that is something to check.
Those Scorpian speakers are pretty heavy duty so I am surprised to hear that one doesn't work,But it happens.
Those driver are quite efficient and loud,I get an easy 120db at 1 meter and 125db standing in front of the amp,Whooooooo !!
But I too didn't much care for there sound back then and even now, although I have net quite gotten re-used to them yet.
The are a very bright speaker and I would generally use the amp on my Sunn 610 cabinet for a better low end until I had got a Sunn concert slave amp to power the 610.
With my Korg DD-1000 Dual Delay this was a Killer stereo setup.
The amp is rated at 200 watts into 4 Ohms but you can bet it is more when you start driving it with distortion and square waves.
I feel that this figure is under rated.
I have read not to run this amp into 2 ohms,But I ran mine with my 6 ohm Sunn 610 with the scorpians all of the time.
Right now I see that they are wired parallel on this one, so I might have wired them in series when I did this back then.
So choose your drivers wisely.
I have not yet measured this one as it has some noise issues,probably a few bad caps and solder joints or connectors from being so old.
Nevertheless it still works and sounds great for what is.
Just as I remember it when I bought my First one brand new in 1986 or 87.
My only gripe about it besides the speakers is that it was a little noisy (a Slight hiss) so I am thinking about replacing all of the opamps.
When I do this I will socket the whole thing so that I can try different ones.
I have a pair of old Jensens that are similar in the sound but not as bright and I might run them in conjunction with the Scorpians,But knowing me I am a little reluctant to do so as they might not last long.
I have had them for a long time and they handle power quite well ,But this amp might be the death of them.
I have been using the Jensen's on my little Park amplifier and they sound very good with that setup.
In the 90's as I was shopping for a new amp and the Marshall Valvestate 8100 had just hit the market and got that after the Peavey had been stolen.
My shop didn't have one yet, But they did have the 80watt combo there and it had a Greenback in it and I just fell in love with sound of that speaker.
Only I couldn't justify an $80 price tag on a 25watt speaker in a 80watt amp,But it sounded sweet!
I tried ever thing they had and I really liked the 5150 cabinet but I didn't get anything because I still had my 610( and still do).
I just picked up 6 Pyle Pro PPA10's to put in that ole' Sunn cabinet and I wiil get them in there in a week or two and post my findings.
They seem to be a pretty stout driver by examining them and the price was right at parts express.
The do have a stamped steel basket,this doesn't bother much as it is for my guitar any how.
After the fact I found a similar driver by eminence with a cast frame at MCM for a few dollars more, oh well.
I am just tickled to have my Sunn 610 producing sound again.
I use this with a Sunn 215 that has some old Altec lansing drivers in it.
I used to have some MCM select 15's in that cabinet for a while and they really rocked! They were a perfect match with the old worn out Sunn alnico 10's with a similar sound only with a very beefy bottom end as expected with a 1000watt amp driving them.
I later fried those 10's and they can be reconed again for the 5th time but the magnets don't seem to be very strong any more.
Maybe one day when I get some extra cash I will do this just to have another type of sound.

I thought that I would never see one of these again and had dreamed about getting another one for the last 25years.

Those don;t look like SCorpions to me. Scorpions have a wide brushed aluminum mounting flange with flatted sides. Shaped a bit like a stop sign. The amp should have had Scorpions originally. Are they labelled Scorpion on the magnets?
If so, new baskets for them can be had from Peavey parts department.

The amp in the picture is not mine I said it looks like that one. They say scorpion on the magnets. It's rated for 160wrms not 200 tho.

The amp is solid state, but has an impedance matching transformer on the output, jack selectable 2 or 4 ohm taps. This allows full power on either impedance load.
The two 8 ohm Scorps make a 4 ohm load, and adding a 4 ohm external cab makes 2 ohms then.
A new basket from PV makes the Scorpion good as new unless the magnet assembly is damaged. That would be rare.
Worth it to me, up to you on yours.

So what do you think would sound better a couple of Celestions or a couple new scorpions? There's a guy selling a couple scorpions on ebay for about a hundred.

That is a Better deal than what a single basket would cost.
Celestions are great but you woulds have to hear them to compare them.
I was going to get some Sidewinder's for my 610 at one time but never did though.
I have the Renown 400 so it is a little bit different as the mid filter has a frequency sweep control on it.
From what I gather there was 4 versions in the Renown series I think.
I was looking for the schematic as I was not aware of the 2ohm rating of the power amp as if there is a stepdown transformer this might change the sound a bit compared to the Renown 400.

Celestions are great but you woulds have to hear them to compare them.
