Hey, I have a Pioneer DEH-P980BT headunit. One of the ones with the motorized faceplate that swivels down to insert the CD then press a button and it swivels closed. Well, the faceplate is stuck in the open position, when the close/open button is pressed (or when the player is turned off or on) it moves up around 2-5mm stops and then after around 4-5sec returns back to the fully open position. Not sure what could be causing this, it just started out of the blue this morning.
Measure the DC voltage across the motor for the face mechanism. Does the voltage drop to zero the instant that is stops moving up?
Be VERY careful not to short the probes between the terminals on the motor and the motor housing or the head unit case. If you do, you'll blow the drive circuit.

Well I fixed it. When doing your test Perry, I noticed as it rotated something was stuck in the teeth of one of the gears. Turns out one of the gears broke a tooth and that was sticking in the gear of its mate blocking things. I couldn't see it though until it rotated into position. I removed the piece of plastic and everything now works fine. Thanks!
