Pioneer DV-563A cheap universal player

I posted a few comments about this deck in this thread, but since they were getting a little off-topic (political) and it was really a digital subject, I thought I would start a new thread here.

Anyways, I bought the 563 for my second (third?) system, mainly because it was the cheapest thing I could find that would do SACD and DVD-A. Alot of the negative comments I've read about the 563 refered to it's redbook CD sound quality, which shouldn't be too much of an issue for me since I will run the PCM out to my Perpetual Technologies P-3A dac.

I opened up the 563, here is what I found: the control/decoding section uses the ST STi5588CVB and STm6316ATXXZ combo. The SACD is handled by a Philips SAA7893HL chip. I've not been able to find data sheets on any of these, just some technology briefs.

There is a Burr Brown DSD1791 dac for the front channels (I think) and two BB DSD1702 dacs. There are two 4560 opamps as filters/buffers for the DSD1702s, I think the DSD1791 is being run single ended without a filter/buffer. I'm thinking adding a simple OPA627/BUF634 output stage taking advantage of the DSD1791's differential output would be a good starting point. The DSD1791 is used in the more expensive Denon DVD-2200.

I'll try to find a local repair shop and see if I can con them into copying the schematic for me.

I am also evaluating this unit as my first SACD/DVD-A player. I just read on the net that Pioneer, in order to keep the cost down, did not implement the native DSD decoding for SACD, and instead used the redbook LPCM decodng to process the data from the SACD to make it common with LPCM stereo decoding. That may account for its PCM sound. So, can you make a comparative evaluation between this player and your other SACD player to see if there are sonic differences that could weigh against the 563A? Thanks.

I've also been reading up on this, and I seem to remember someone disproving this rumor, after spending some time following signals around with an oscilloscope. I'll see if I can find the reference.

Might have been a quote from me. The BB DAC chips are getting a DSD signal (to the DSDL and DSDR pins.) It's not converting it to PCM before the DAC. The 1791 does do some processing on it, but doesn't appear to convert it to PCM for that processing. I say that since there's a lot of high frequency noise when using DSD which is absent when using CD or DVD-A. If it was converting to PCM that noise wouldn't be there.

If the player converts the SACD datastrem to PCM, doesn't that mean you're not getting the promise of high-resolution audio? It's a DOWNconversion, right?

I also read those 1-bit DACs in CD's 44.1KILOhz have these so-called high frequency noise inherent but aren't we nitpicking about high frequcny noise when we're talking about DSD's 1-bit 2.8 MEGA hz sampling?

Hi,

I have an pioneer dv-747a.
Wich uses the CS4392 DAC, any opinions on these?
Looking at the picture in the link
, I was wondering if anyone would know what kind of connection is used in the left bottom(not soldered). Not RS232.. I did a search but couldn't find any. (DVI mabye?)
Anyone?

Regards,
Remco Blankesteijn.

I hope to have a chance to compare it to my other SACD player, the Stereophile class A rated Sony SCD-C555ES. But since we have a new baby and that system is in the living room of our two bedroom apartment, it may be a while.

The 555 player was modified by Doug Oade of Oade Brothers Audio. I bought it pre-modified so I don't have any experience with the unit stock. Doug claims the mod makes the 555 sound more like the 777. I've known Doug for more than 20 years, and trust his judgement. I know he changed the output opamps, but since he removed the markings, I don't know what they are. The modded 555 sounds better than my stock DVP-S9000ES, which was another well reviewed player.

I have gone through the menus and turned off all of the bass management and set the 563 for two speakers only as recommended in a review on audioreview.com. I did leave the digital output enabled to drive my P-3A.

Thanks for the SAA7893 datasheet Jaka.

My attempts at scamming a free copy of the schematic have been thwarted so far; the local Norman's electronics was no help, and a call to the place I worked at 14 years ago told me I was free to look through their boxes of repair manuals, the only problem is they are ~250 miles away. Pioneer will sell me the service manual for $28 plus shipping and handling which came to $39, I can't bring myself to spend 25% of the cost of the unit to purchase the schematic.

So I guess for now I will just try listening to it and try some upgrades to dampen the chassis. This thing is really flimsy and light. Has anyone tried mixing lead shot (used in shotgun shells) with an adhesive to make a sound deadening and mass adding compound? Would silicon work?

Also, does anyone know if the DV-563A is the same as the UK speck DV-565. I like the layout of the 565's front panel much better.
