I have been using a Sony DVP-S7000 as my single disc reference player but today I scored a Pioneer DV-79AVi from the local GoodWill store. They both sound really good and I know the Pioneer will play SACD and DVD-A as well. That's a mute point as I don't play anything but CD's at this time.
So since they both sound great, what payer do you think I should keep in my rack for a reference player and why? Is one technically superior to the other?
Thank You

The DV79avi should darn well sound better, but it also is absolutely FAR more long term reliable. The 7000 is extremely prone to power supply failures and the laser is quite a lot less than totally reliable. The 79avi, and the lower models of the same year(59avi, 47a, 47ai, 45a, 578, 563) have about the only super-reliable laser/mech in the universe of universal players, and has very well-chosen parts in general. And it really should beat the 7000 for sound easily. If not, I'd conclude that you have inadequacies elsewhere in your system.
Hi Stephensank, lot's of good info there. How is the DAC and related circuitry on the Pioneer. I see that it has digital out for CD only. Can I gain much with an outboard DAC? Picking up a HDMI cable this week so I can see how the options are configured inside. Figure I'll turn off all the audio filters and try it that way.
I downloaded the manual for it and there is a ton of configuration options. Any suggestions for the best setup for straight audio?
Thanks

The menu system is very self-explanatory, and it's very easy to get it outputting 'unmolested' audio. It would take a pretty damned excellent outboard dac to sound better. The 79's PCM1738 dacs are, with the conventional i/v & output stages used, on the bit laid back side as far as bass punch & top end, but still very natural. So, one might be seduced by a dac unit that has punchy bass and/or sparkly top end, only to find after some time that these aspects are exaggerated, as is the case with plenty of dac units on the market. Just saying don't abandon the 79 as a full player easily. Live with a dac for a while before deciding it's really better.
Hi Stephensank, your right. I picked up a cable today and got into the menu's. It was all set up for 5.1 AV sound. I set it up for 2 channel and turned one of the filters off that was on. Sounds fantastic.
The menu is easy to follow, a few things I wasn't sure of, I'll read the manual later on but I'm much happier with it now.
Thanks for all the great info.
