Hello,
as a happy user of a Sony Playstation 1 (earliest model with RCA output) as a dedicated CD-player, I just got happier by finding out that an original remote control (with remote receiver for the game controller port) made by Sony for the Playstation 2 works with the Playstation 1, too.
Use the buttons around "select" and "start" and not the normal buttons, which won't work. This way you have play, stop, skip...
Is there anyone else around using a Playstation 1 as a "giant-killer"-CD-player? It is really incredible how good a PS 1 sounds.
No joke at all! Even a highly regarded German hifi-magazin uses them as a digital source for testing dream equipment.
But do not try with the PS One (latest version) - this model is not comparable to the early models at all in sonic regards - only in playing games🙂

I have an original PS1 purchased the first day available for consumer purchase, and I will be experimenting with it. Are there any mods for this machine?
Has anyone designed/made some sort of controlled substitute? One that would have play, stop, skip etc. and plug into the controller port?
mods/tweaks for PS 1

The best mod would be to improve the mechanical stability by building a new case. There is such a mod at www.methe-family.de/cd.htm
I heard that the PS 1 sounds best when left unchanged in the electronic part - it is even reported that some modders came back to the original version. On the other hand there is a company which offers a CD-player based on the PS One with a tube output stage!
Personally I use a PS 1 (earliest version) with a brand new drive taken from the Playstation One - the old drive was broken. I plan to put some more holes in the case where the PSU is placed, since it seems to be quite hot inside the case. And improve the cooling by putting the PS 1 on feets/spikes - this way the air can circulate better from the bottom to the sides and the top.
Hook up some decent interconnects to your PS 1, adjust the volume (lower output level than normal) and enjoy having the early version of the Playstation and enjoy the music. You will be surprised, but give it a chance to burn in a while.

SCPH-1002 with PSOne drive
Hi, Kal,
Can this mod be made without any problem? Is the flat cable long enough? Or some additional modifications are necessary?
I ask because yesterday I met first my new aquisition, the "first " PS-1, (coming from Germany, source eBay). It sounds surprinsingly well via my Aleph-X amp (directly, no preamp) and some 100 kg monster DIY speakers made inspired from the Wilson's WATT/PUPPY.
I have already heard from the problems with the plastic laser unit; procured already a new unit from PSOne (has not arrived yet). My question were wether the original disk-driving mechanics are of good fiability and you had problems with the laser, too, or it would be better to procure the whole drive as well?
And another one: I feel you got the ImageHIFI article. Be so kind and email it to me.
Regards,
Laci

Hi,
I am sorry, but I do not have the IMAGE HIFI article anymore. But there was nothing special about it - the did not even mention the differences between the different types.
They just said that the PS is a great CD-player and might even be a giant killer. The 1002 is definately the very best.
I peplaced the whole CD-ROM-drive with that of a PS ONE (the small one) - you only have to enlarge the "hole" in the upper part of the PS-case so that the new CD_ROM-drive has got enough place. Not alot of work to do.
For further information take a look at the link which I posted above - it is in German but has got good pictures!!! Very interseting and it offers other interesting links.
Have fun with this "great" CD-player!

I bought a playstation, bought a remote control, bought a Sony remote control, bought a second playstation, bought two replacement drives, nothing works. Am I too stupid? Do I have bad luck? Do I have the wrong remote control?
The buttons around select and start are named L1 L2 L3 R1 R2 R3.

I think you have. You need a remote control for the Playstation 2 (!) this one normally has buttons for "play", "skip" etc. they all work (in my arrangement), except for the "stop" button - you have to use "select" instead.
My one is a really cheap no-name product and it works. There are no Buttons named like yours.
Test your Playstation 1 with pressed CDs - with burnt CD there are sometimes problems.
