Hi Folks,
My cousin is looking for some speakers he can rock out to but he is on a tight budget. His dad has a pair of damaged Polk RT3s that we thought we could salvage. Here are the specs:
Driver Complement
Mid/Woofer 1 - 5-1/4" Diameter (13.34cm)
Tweeter 1 - 1" Diameter (2.54cm)
Dimensions
Cabinet Size 12-1/2" H x 7-1/4" W x 8-1/2" D
(31.75cm H x 18.41cm W x 21.59cm D)
Enclosure Type Vented, dual port
Here's a picture RT3 Specs Page : High performance bookshelf speakers : Polk Audio
And a video Polk RT3 and RT12 test - YouTube
and a mod that Dr. Mark has done Dr. Mark Says Blog Archive Polk RT3 speaker mod.
Dr. Mark's mod is beyond our budget so I was hoping if I could get some suggestions from the forum here. Is it worth trying to put together drivers and a crossover to work in this cabinet? Is there any kind person out there willing to model something for us?

This dayton driver looks like it would fit the woofer cut out

Do you mean the drivers are too expensive?
You need to have a few (selected compatible drivers) to be able to make a choice. After that you may need to change the xover or a kit/design with those same drivers. Is that (2 drivers) all that you need?

Yes, the drivers he used, especially the mid, are pretty expensive.
The speaker is a two way so a mid and tweeter are what we need.
I looked at some kits I haven't found anything to match the volume
of the polk cabinet.

This kit looks like it would work but the woofer is a big for the polk cut-out
