Power transformer colors & wiring
I have some power transformers with the following wiring on the primaries:
Red, black, purple, grey, brown, yellow
1) I assume these are dual primaries, but am not sure how this works. More to the point, what do all the colors mean?
2) If not in use, should purple & grey, and brown and yellow be tied together?
3) In line with 2, can brown and yellow be separated?
I may have more questions once I get all this straight.
Thanks.

Red is usually HT, black primary, gray might be a tertiary heater, brown could be primary, heater or ground (CT), yellow for rectifier filament.
Since your colors are *everywhere*, clearly it doesn't follow any rules. Better get out the ohmmeter.

If all those are really primary wires, it is more than just dual primaries, it is no doubt also multivoltage. Japanese stuff in particular often is set up to select between 100v, 120v, 220v, 240v. And even others.
AS far as I know there is no standard to that, but I could be wrong. I am used to old school USA power transformers.
Do you have any idea what they came from?

Hi,
Hammond has a transformer line with 2 multitap primaries, you can look at their website http://www.hammondmfg.com, the series is called 300 classic series, search i.e. for 374BX.
I assume your tranny has 2 primaries with 0V - 110V - 120V, so you can wire it for different regions on earth.
But you have to ohm it out, i don't think there is such as standard colors. The Hammond colors are completely different to yours.

Thanks for these replies. I do indeed think these are multivoltage transformers. I have no idea where they're from. They're in an early MFA preamp.
I can tell you this.
They're hooked up like this.
Red and black to HT.
Yellow to neutral.
Grey and purple to nothing.
The browns are interesting. I have three of these units, and all the browns are tied together. They sit about 1.5 volts above neutral. That is, if the voltage from HT to the yellow neutral is 120, the voltage from HT to the brown wires is about 118.5.

I have an Antek AS-3218 with dual primaries in red and black. Then there's that purple wire. Should I ground it to the chassis of a Pass F4 or to the power supply filtering board supplied by the DIY Store?
I'm building a F4 Amplifier using an Antek AS-3218 transformer. The dual primaries are red and black. There is also a purple wire. Is this a ground that should be wired to the Power Supply or directly to the metal chassis near the input switch?
According to this datasheet, Purple is connected to the transformer core. I'd connect it to the chassis.
