QSC RMX 5050 and CVP 2153

Hello,

I do not know alot about audio in general, but i know i problem when i hear one. 😛 None of the woofers on my Cerwin Vega speakers are playing, but the voice coil plays. I'v got three speakers, so one speaker is bridged. They have been playing smooth for one and a half year, but suddenly the woofers stopped working. In an attempt to fix this myself, i messed up the switches on the QSC RMX 5050 aswell. So if anyone know how the switches should be set for a system with three*CVP 2153 or why the woofers isn't playing, help will be appreciated. 🙂

ok first question:
how do you have the CVP2153es set up?
I note from the manual they can either be set up as Bi-amp or full range.
Bi-amp would require an external active crossover (according to the manual the RMX5050 does not have a built in cross over mode).
of course if the speakers are set to Bi-amp mode and you are only feeding one signal to them (or one channel of your amp has failed, or the low out from your crossover has died) that could explain why the woofers do not work.

When you say "but the voice coil plays" do you mean that the tweeters do work?

Now when you say you have " three speakers, so one speaker is bridged" that does not make sense so something may have gone missing in translation?

It is odd you have three speakers, so for sound reinforcement you might be running them as 'Left', 'Right' and 'fill' in which case they would usually each be fed by a different send from your desk and therefore each would need their own amplifier channel or channels (if Bi-amped).

Switch settings are going to depend on what your set up is, but I note the QSC RMX 5050 is not recommended to run into lower than 4 ohms in bridged mode, and since your speakers are 4 ohm (in full range mode) I would suggest running the amplifiers in stereo. also to reduce excessive excursion it may also be an idea to set the High pass filter at 30Hz (based on the specifications in the CVP-2153 manual) and unless you have a specific reason I would always suggest having the limiter on, based on this the switch settings would be: 1 Right, 2 Right, 3 to 8 Left, 9 Right, 10 Right.

First cable goes from CH1 (amplifier) --> "Input" on speaker 1
Second cable goes from "Trough" on speaker 1 to "Input" on speaker 2.
Third cable goes from CH2 (amplifier) --> "Input" on speaker 3.

yes, "but the voice coils plays" means that the tweeters do work, but they plays really fuzzy, like a bad radio signal.

what i ment with "...three speakers, so one speaker is bridged": one cable goes from "Trough" on speaker 1 --> "Input" on speaker 2.

Ah, now I can see what the set up is..
has this ever worked?
or is it a new setup you are trying to get to work?

Is the amplifier getting signal?
Unplug the speakers, and push signal into your amplifier as hard as it can go, if all is good here, the clip lights on your amplifier should light (I did say unplug the speakers before this test ;-) )- if not, the fault is either with the amplifier or before it.

Next check your speaker cables - Speakons can have 4 wires and for a single channel from your amplifier we want to use 1+ and 1- so you may want to unscrew the back of the connectors and check that the wires connect to 1+ and 1- at each end. I am also presuming you know that these connectors require a turn after being inserted until they click into place.

now plug in only 1 speaker, and see if that works, try it in both sides of the amplifier and try different speakers one at a time.

tweeters working but very fuzzy could be a dodgy connection somewhere (although I have also heard something similar when two channels of an amplifier where connected to the same speaker).

Let me know what you find....
 
This setup has been running smooth for one and a half year.

The amplifier is getting signals, clip light is working.

Nothing wrong with the cables.

That leaves me to the fuse in the speakers. I heard that on CV speakers, the fuse only disconnets the bass elements and not the tweeter. And since everything else is working, that seems to be the only option. Do you know where i can find the fuse? I dont even know where to look inside the speaker. Nor can i find any manuals on the internett.
 
It's working again 😀

Thank you for good help, i tried one speaker at a time in both channels, and all speakers did work in both channels. When i plugged in two speakers, one in CH1 and the other in CH2 it worked fine. But when i bridged the third one with the speaker attached to CH1, it ****** up again.

So the amplifier worked, all speakers worked, that left me to the outlet. Even though i have used the same outlet for one and a half year, it suddenly wont deliver enough power. I brought in a killer generator, and it started to play like only CV speakers can 😀

Thanks again, silly mistake by not checking the outlet in an earlier stage, but as i said, i'v always used it and it has worked perfectly. This leaves me to another issue, with the outlet. But i wont bother you with this one 😉
 
Glad you have it working, but now you have me pondering....
I would have thought the most likely fault with a power point outlet to be a dodgy connection somewhere.
noting that your system is portable I should point out that screw terminals (power cables typically use screw terminals) can be susceptible to vibration and work them selves loose over time so I would wonder if this could be the root cause of your current fault?
Although I would expect a dodgy connection to not cause trouble until you push the amp hard so I guess the symptoms were not so obvious so I am not so sure I would consider it a "silly mistake by not checking the outlet in an earlier stage" 🙂
