I have partially got an RPi semi running over the last few days. I hit many dead ends and re-formatted the SD card many times. I have got to the point where I have it working and I would like to get it to stream through the Dac Hat.
I have tried flashing Volumio to the SD card having downloaded a Windows version on my laptop. This results in the RPi booting up, opening Volumio and then freezing. It won't then do anything else. After removing Volumio it powers on OK.
Should I be using the RPi and not Windows to install Volumio?

Download the Volumio for Raspberry Pi version to your PC. On your PC, use balenaEtcher to flash the image to SD. https://www.balena.io/etcher/
I prefer Moode audio. https://moodeaudio.org/

Ah, that makes sense as I had done the above but D Loaded and flashed the version for Windows and not RPi!
Also, Volumio and Moode are designed to be used headless (does not use video output from the RPi). Volumio uses an app to connect with your Android or iPhone. With Moode, I recommend connecting the Pi to Ethernet on the same lan as PC, then connect with http://moode with PC and setup WiFi. See the Moode setup guide.
There is an option in software for activating the screen, but You have to log in first for the initial setup.Volumio and Moode are designed to be used headless (does not use video output from the RPi).
FYI: Reformatting an SD Card is seldom required. I remember having to do it once in 10 years.
Most of the imaging programs overwrite everything on the SD card.

It is a Pi 2 v1.1@Puffin... what model of RPi are you using ? There may well be different versions of the O/S' you have mentioned for your device ;-)
Yesterday I flashed Volumio for RPi to the SD card and it has done what it did before. It loads and just stalls. I left it for about an hour as it says first boot can take some time. Could the SD card be corrupted? Without Volumio on it it loads RPi with no problems.
It seems that you are expecting Volumio to 'appear' on a monitor connected to your Pi...as you say.."it loads RPi with no problems" (which is what 'RPi' does...)
Volumio, MoOde, PiCore player do not appear on a monitor connected to your Pi.
You have to connect to them from another device...phone, tablet, PC etc by discovering their IP address (something like 192.168.x.xx)and using that in the search bar of your browser.
This will bring up the web page of the player where you can make adjustments, configure, and play your music.
As they do not use attached screens they are known as 'headless' players.

Drone7, that is great and obviously something I wasn't aware of. I now know what "Headless" means. They should put a warning on the Pi's that they should not be attempted by anyone over 60!It seems that you are expecting Volumio to 'appear' on a monitor connected to your Pi...as you say.."it loads RPi with no problems" (which is what 'RPi' does...)

My problem is that Volumio does not seem to load or load properly. I get the pic below on screen after I have put in the required "Volumio" twice, once ofr login and again for the password, but it then just hangs and I can't then access the main Pi page with Chromium etc. I am considering using Moode and I assume that I would operate this from a phone or tablet.
After burning the image to the SD card, put it in the Pi slot and power up. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the OS to boot up.Drone7, that is great and obviously something I wasn't aware of. You can download Volumio software through "App Store" on iphone Ipad its a paid app. or volumio app from google store, I found the ios version to be much more stable and better.
if you are on the same wifi then the app will be able to connect to volumio easily. Otherwise look at the available wifi connections on your iphone/ipad/android when you find "volumio' or something like that connect to it, you can find the password in the readme file of volumio.
Once connected to the volumio wifi, fireup the volumio app on your ipda/iphone/android and configure. Since you have not done it before I suggest you go through the volumio readme or guide.
rehanabid, thank you for that information. I will report back after I have attempted it. Thanks. After burning the image to the SD card, put it in the Pi slot and power up. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the OS to boot up.
