For my next project I would like to use car audio speakers, the reason is that I can buy them off the shelf here, and also check the specs of the speakers since it is a name brand specific model.

If I order a Fostex or Tang band or whatever, it will take weeks for them to appear, and there is no possiblity of exchange if they don't sound good.

How about these Pioneer car audio speakers? Or similar? Will post exact model later.

Nothing wrong with car audio speakers to be used for home audio, just because they are labeled for 'car'.
Typically they are built for much harsher environment, as car is exposed to extremes of temperature and humidity, and speakers have to endure that.
Other thing is they are typically made with lesser quality in mind, so you get what you paid for.
And yes, those 500 watts is just another proof of lesser standards...50 watts continuous would fry the coils in minutes.

But I have seen folks putting high quality hifi speakers into cars, why not use car speakers at home. They are just speakers!
(some forum members do not think so)

My experience with auto speakers has been mixed. They are 4 Ohms, with high Qts of .8 or above. They have very stiff suspensions and higher FS in order to handle the higher power requirements. Best bet is to try to find some 6 X 9 or 6.5 inch models in your local auto scrap yard. The best models are those in the rear deck, as door speaker usually get wet as the cars age. They are good for open back applications or sealed systems.

I would like to use the Fostex, but buying speakers I can listen to , in open baffle form, is really convenient. Those tweeter things in the middle must be causing a whole lot of defraction effects, but my present car speakers sound good, cosidering they are aimed at my feet. They may be too bright at ear level but that's the point of listening before buying. Also, I have listened to two such speakers mounted on a makeshift panel at the place I bought my car stereo, they sounded really good.

Did I mention that I am going to be building an open baffle speaker? Does that change anything?

All car speakers are designed to be bright (at ear level). Use software parametric equalizer.
Open baffle is OK for car speakers, bur do not expect loud deep bass. Closed box or TL are the best for extracting the maximum bass SPL from car speakers.
