Hi I’ve connected the optical out from my Samsung Smart TV to my HiFi amp via a stand alone JustBoom DAC. The output quality is very good, but I would like some way to add a remote volume control. All the other DAC’s seem to stack on a Raspberry I, which is fine, but I cannot find one with optical in. Any ideas?
Normally the remote volume control of the HiFi amplifier works adequate.
Anyway, there are many DACs with Toslink input and volume control (or they can be modified). Why would you need a Raspberry Pi for that?
You could also modify your DAC with a IR remote controlled volume controller. If the amplifier of unknown brand and features (why oh why do people that need help never give the required information straight away?) has remote volume control AND you add a DAC with remote volume control this might even work counterproductive for family members.
Simplest would be to modify the amplifier to remote controlled volume. Piece of cake in most cases.

The HiFi amp is an old Celestion Ditton one without remote volume control. The DAC doesn’t appear to have provision for adding IR, hence the question. I’ve tried contacting just boom, but they’re support appears non existent. I also have an IQ Audio DAC , which is connected to my hard drive for streaming high quality audio. This is mounted on a raspberry pi and I can control the volume via Rune Audio. Unfortunately the IQ Audio doesn’t have optical in.
Most simple, most common, most user friendly (just 1 volume control for all devices) and best for optimal sound quality is to either add remote controlled volume to the Celestion or to replace it for an amplifier that has remote controlled volume (preferably hardware volume control). Most amplifiers with hardware volume control win hands down from software controlled volume at the sources themselves.
