Repairing a Mirage PS-12-90 Powered Subwoofer amp (info needed)

Hello everybody!

Hope I'm in the right forum with these questions.

I had a powered subwoofer come to me for repair & hope I can get a little info on a part or two.

It is a Mirage, model: PS-12-90

As soon as I started looking at it I pulled the amp / power supply off of the back of the unit to inspect it before powering it on. I can tell someone else did some repairs in there before as they did not do a very good job, they did not even install / replace the negative regulator which I will assume is a 79L15 as there is nothing in its place, and the positive regulator that is in there is a 78L15 & the datasheet of the two parts match up to the pin connection on the board. They burnt several pads while soldering as well & did not bolt the main power amplifier I.C to the heat-sink properly, maybe they replaced it & the leads were not as long as the original, I don’t know, but it don’t look like a reliable connection for thermal transfer.

My main question, however, is one of the small 16-pin I.C chips on the board (pc board designation UD) (I'll have pictures at the bottom of this post of the amp / I.C chip in question); the part number was sanded off the I.C so I am not sure what it is, & it looks like it will need replaced as PIN-11 appears to have broken off of the I.C & they tried to solder a small jumper to it & it looks like a very bad connection. From what I can tell, PIN-11 is the Vcc(+) pin & PIN-6 appears to be the Vcc(-) pin on this chip. If someone has a schematic for the PS-12-90 that should be all I need, but since the number is sanded off I am guessing the schematics are not available for this amp.

It looks like all the other part numbers are still on the components; just this one I.C has been sanded off.

Hopefully someone can give me some info on this part as I am not sure what it is.

I greatly appreciate any help on this matter! Thank you all for taking the time to view this post. Take care.

Update:

I don’t know why I did not contact the Mirage Company first as I usually always contact any companies first when I need info, then ask for help later if they won’t or can’t help.

I went ahead and contacted the company that makes the Mirage PS-12-90 subwoofer & asked them for the schematics as they would help with my repair; they replied within a couple days with the attached schematics of the unit!

After reviewing the schematic I found that the sanded off I.C chip is an LM13700AN.

I should not have any problems repairing it now, but if I do I may post back for help.

Ok, just figured I would post an update.

Take care!

I have a ps-12-90 that needs repaired (makes a white noise sporadically). I just sent it to a Mirage-approved service center in Indiana. They contacted Mirage support, but were not able to get a schematic.

Is it possible for you to email me the schematic so I can pass it along? I wil have a better chance of a successful repair.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello!

I do not post real often & hardly ever check my email, so any threads I am not posting in that are recent to me, I may not see right away.

I do have the schematics for the Mirage PS-12-90; I found out there are two different versions, one based on a chip-amp like this one, & one using a MOSFET based output stage. I have both copies; one thanks to Mirage, & the other thanks to a fellow member that acquired from Mirage if I am not mistaken as well.

I will gladly email anyone the schematics if they need them, however, since I do not check my email very often & may not see a request for them, my best suggestion would be to email the Mirage company & request the schematic for your particular unit (they were pretty quick to send it to me), you probably want to check yours to see if it uses the chip-amp output stage or is MOSFET based, so you can get the correct schematic sent to you. They were real helpful for me, so I think that would be the best idea as I may be kind of slow in reply. If all else fails send me a PM with your email address you want me to send the schematic to & which one you need & I will send it as soon as I see your message.

Take care everybody!

Pioneer621, thank you for your replies to both this thread and mine.

I'm interested in any documents related to the PS-12-180, and since the PS-12-90 is its "little brother", I'm interested in any docs you may have for that model.

Thanks in advance.

Amp Moduel needed for a Mirage PS-12-90

I have a Mirage PS-12-90 subwoofer. It went out and I took it to a certified repairman. He said the the Amp Moduel is out but he cannot find parts. Does anyone know where I can get the Amp Moduel for the PS-12-90?

PS 12 90 amp

Hello, Everyone!
There's a guy here in Chicago that parts out speakers, and sells then on e-bay; he can't get anything for the cabinets, so years ago already I've been taking the cabinets off his hands.
Got a Mirage PS 12 90 a while back; found a woofer on e-bay for $40; and recently got an amp ("not working") for $40 also.
No fuse, so that my be the only reason it's not working. Saw the label on the inside saying what fuse to use, so that will be my first step. Also looks like one of the ICs was "sanded", as mentioned below. Also reading about 2 different versions.
Pioneer621, how can I get a copy of the schematics from you?
tks everyone.

Mirage ps-12-90 circuit diagram wanted

I have also inherited such a sub that 'freaks out' (as if there were static buildup). I suspect one of the amp stages. I am a n00b at anything surrounding audio electronics but would love to take this on as a little personal project. Has anyone been able to get the circuit diagram from the user Pioneer621?

Schematic needed for Mirage PS-12-90

Hello Pioneer621

A good friend of mine just brought an intermittent Mirage PS-12-90 sub-woofer for me to look at. After opening it I couldn’t see anything obvious that could cause the problem therefore my next step would be to trace the audio paths. But to do this I need a schematic diagram. Having search the net I ran across your blog page where you described a problem you encountered with your sub.

It’s very likely I could repair my friend’s sub if I could find a copy of the schematic; could you email a copy to me? It would be very much appreciated.

I’ve tried to contact Mirage but they say that they don’t have anything on that model.

Thanks in advance

Philip

Hello Pioneer621

Thanks for the info, it helped greatly in discovering the problem.

I should have told you that the sub was exactly the same as the photos you provided in this forum (i.e. the chip amp version).

Because I believe that this problem can occur with many others, I’ve decided to post the repair on your blog.

Actually there were two problems:

The first was relatively easy to fix being that one lead of the small regulator chips was not soldered.

The second problem was caused by a flakey crossover adjustment pot, not the wiper but rather the junction of the solder tab to the resistive element of the pot which was held together by a small rivet. I removed the PCB mounted pot and temporarily replaced it with an outboard 100K pot and this proved that indeed the pot was the culprit. The next task was to try and fix the bad pot, this I did by gently tapping the 3 little rivets holding the solder tabs with a center punch until the tabs were no longer loose. I then re-soldered the pot to the PCB, and vola, It worked like new.

It should be known that the two Mirage pots are actually part of the mechanical mounting of the PC board and any vibration / movement of the board will stress these small rivets allowing them to become loose with time. Therefore I think this problem was an inherent design weakness, and this little fix might help others with a similar issue with the Mirage Sub.

Again Thanks.

Philip

No problem! Glad you got it sorted.

I don't always see the schematic requests in a timely manner, however I do send them once I eventually see them. Would be nice to find a place to host / upload them as I get a handful of requests each year and some took me a month to see the request sadly as I do not check the site / email all the time. If I didn't respond to the thread here, it was likely done through PM / email.

The company doesn't seem to be giving out the schematics anymore from what people mention when asking for the schematic. I guess they say they do not have them; I'll look into uploading them somewhere if I can figure it out at some point.

Again glad you got the problems figured out!

Hi Pioneer621. Just like you I got a PS-12-90 that has some issues with the amp, I tried contacting the company but they don´t have the schematic anymore! I´ve searched online and came across this forum, and apparently you´re the only person that has the schematic. I would greatly appreciate if you could email it to me: burbvoski_85@hotmail.com
Thanks in advance!

Ok, thought I'd see if I can upload these to the forum. I don't know if it is frowned upon to post schematics such as these, but I often miss the requests. If posting these files is not allowed, any forum moderator please delete this post. I'm not sure if I ever responded to burbvoski as I do not recall his post, sorry if I missed yours.

They are PDF files and the one labeled PS1290_CHIPAMP_TYPE is the chipamp version another Diyaudio member sent me that he said he got from the company if I recall.

The other labeled PS-12 has 4 parts and is the one they sent me, it is the discrete version.

Quality of the schematics isn't great.

I do not know how many versions they had of this, or if these files are proper to the PS-12-90 subwoofer amp posted in this thread, but it helped with my repair at the time and possibly others.

Hopefully these attach to this thread so no one has to contact me for them as it is usually months before I notice a request. Sorry if I missed your post or PM asking for these.
