Replacement for Shure M 75?

Hello and a happy new year to all of you!

Due to a worn-out stylus, I'd like to replace the ancient Shure M 75 of my Dual 1226 turntable and upgrade it to an elliptical needle. Which pickup cartridge would you recommend me to chose? Is a Shure M 97 XE a suitable option?

Best regards!

Thanks for the URL to this review, billshurv!

I do not see any disadvantages here for both Jico styli he reviews. The first one (Shure M95-ED) represents no comparison to the original Shure stylus, the second one only shows personal preferences.

I think I'll give them a try for the N75-ED stylus - and, by the way, for the DN796 which they offer as an option for my ELAC ESG 796 HSP cartridge, as all other aftermarket replacement styli for this one are simply elliptical needles.

Best regards!

Let us know how it sounds! I recently bought an Ed Saunders stylus replacement for my Dual 1214 M75 cartridge. It should arrive soon🙂 It would be interesting to do some comparisons about their strengths and weaknesses. I noticed that it costs about the same as the one you bought..

Is your M75 type 1 or 2? If type 1, you have several options - see attacment image. I currently have a JICO V15 III stylus on mine.

Thanks a lot for this very useful information!

Unfortunately my cartridge is not represented by any of these pics. It's a Shure M 75 type D. There are no metal clamps at all, just a plastic body, but not even a plastic 1/2" fitting is present. It is somehow, I really dunno how, fixed to the Dual 1226 headshell, which itself is fitted with 1/2" screw slots. But it seems that the stylus is identical with those for type 1 in your pics. So I'd give a V 15 III stylus a try.

Best regards!

The V-15 III stylus may not be a good match for the Duals. The M75D headshell looks like it may be too heavy for high compliance carts. Without knowing the tonearm effective mass and headshell weight (neither are listed in the Owners or Service Manuals), I would probably stick with the recommended stock Shure N75B Type 2 for conical or N75EJ Type 2 for elliptacle; both track at 1.5 - 3 grams. The JICO replacements would be N75B/2, N75B/2 SAS, N75EJ/2, N75EJ/2 SAS.
