Hello everyone, I want some expert opinions on swaping a PCM1796 with a PCM1795, as i read on TI specs sheet, both are the same pin configuration and pin by pin compatible, the only difference is that the PCM1795 is 32 bit DAC, I am thinking do this mod to the SONY XA-5400ES SACD PLAYER.
I've just pulled up the two datasheets side by side on my monitor (its widescreen😛). The two parts look identical - even the plots of noise are indistinguishable. Given there's only 16 bits on a CD, the difference between 24 and 32bits in the DAC is pure marketing. I suggest finding an upgrade which is going to make a sonic difference and doesn't require desoldering and re-soldering a fine-pitched chip.

I think the the only change in 1795 is the input buffer. Was made large, compatible with 32 bit so it would accept that with no confusion. But right after that, it gets truncated to 24 bit and runs in the same pathway like on the 1796.
So... unless you have a DSP or other device outputting 32 bit (and no flexibility to change it to 24 bit) ahead of DAC, it is pointless to go this route. There is no quality improvement whatsoever.
PS: To mod a DSD player with that would be pointless from other reason too - DSD signal is 1 bit, has nothing to do with 32 bit PCM.
