I recently bought the 9 Beethoven symphonies in a 5 CD collection (Anris Nelsons, Wiener Philharmoniker, Deutsche Grammophon). Included in the set was a Blu Ray audio disc with the entire set.
I am building a collection of high res audio files, mostly 24 bit 96k FLAC, but a few DSD as well.
I would like extract the Blu Ray Audio data onto my laptop. I am a bit stumped on how to start. the normal "CD Rip" process I use does not really work.
I have no experience in ripping the video from DVD or blu ray discs... so I am a newbe...
any thoughts?

I've never tried a blu-ray, however, when I rip and burn from DVD's I use:
- smartripper to download the VOB video/audio files from the DVD to PC hard drive
- DVD2AVI to extract the audio from the VOB files to convert to the sample rate for audio CD which creates a single huge WAV file
- audacity to edit the .wav files adding a couple of seconds between songs, fade-in/fade-out
- Burn the CD from the WAV files

Short answer is you can’t. Blu ray is DRM’d to death.
Long answer is so involved I’ve forgotten how.

Yes you can rip Blu-ray discs (including Blu-ray "Pure Audio"). The long-established method is to run the commercial program, AnyDVD HD, in the background, which decrypts and exposes the contents of the disc to the Windows operating system, then use the freeware programs BDInfo and tsMuxeR to perform the rip.
More recently MakeMKV has become popular. It's currently in beta stage and free, but will eventually become commercial software.

DVD2AVI to extract the audio from the VOB files
Those are AOB files I presume, not VOBs, for VOBs I'm still using the old DVDdecrypter, split by chapter method.
I've had success with Makemkv. Make sure You rip all the disks in the trial period.
Even if You uninstall it there is a hidden marker file left for checking the next installation. Of course You can install it again if You format the hard disk.
Or you could, you know, buy it. 😛
I've used Makemkv attempting to recover a corrupted video on an old CDR. Was not successful.

During the beta stage of development the author of MakeMKV has said you can continue to use the program for free, even after the "trial" period expires, and has provided the necessary activation key -Make sure You rip all the disks in the trial period.
MakeMKV is free while in beta - www.makemkv.com
But if you like this software (even in beta form) you may offer to pay for it, anyway -

Handbrake can rip a blu-ray disc, but only when used in conjunction with some form of disc decryption program such as AnyDVD HD, similar to what I described earlier in post #5.
So Handbrake is an alternative to tsMuxeR, but both of these programs require a "helper" decryption program.

hifijim, although we haven't heard from you since your first post, I trust you are now happily ripping your Blu-ray Audio discs.

How to find and delete that bother?
