I have a Rotel RCD 990 CD player that functions perfectly except
That it doesnt play track 1. It will play the TOC fine, never skips any disc
even scratched discs. So put disc in and press play and it will show Track 1 but just gets stuck there for infinity unless you press track 2 etc. Basically tracks perfectly except for the 1st song.
The only way I can play track 1 is to go to Track 2 and manually rewind to the start of Track 1 and it will play it fine.
It has the Philips CDM 9 PRO transport. I recapped the Focus/Servos/spindle
Motor/Tray Door motor power supply caps as well replaced the resistors associated with CRCRC as they were looking a little overheated.
This power supply drives the 8 TCA0372 power opamps for these circuits.
These "upgrades" did not make a difference and track 1 is unplayable.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Dan
Is track 1 an audio track ? some CD's Mike Oldfield songs of distant earth have a data track that plays a video on computers. Does Track 1 play in other CD players ? ( the car for instance )
Cheers / Chris

Unfotunelately it happens for all CDs.....
Inspect the sled mechanism at the very inside of the stroke (toward the spindle) for debris or other restrictions. The TOC is at the end of stroke (beginning of disc) so the problem may be immediately thereafter.

It is swing arm is free-wheeling with no restrictions whatsoever...
If you can't find any excessive play in the arm and spindle bearings, you might have to put all the servo outputs on a scope at once to make easy sense of it. Something like that..
(of course by then you will want to make sure laser current has not gone too high)

Hi Dan
Maybe the players logic has become confused, I notice the RCD990 Manual
http://www.rotel.com/content/manuals/rcd990_eng.pdf provides advice about alternate use of the track selection buttons - where they can be used for dither or Digital output on or off.
Maybe track 2 is the default where the dither or digital out is yet still being decided to select, but has not been decided upon.... Also worthwhile checking the remote control as it might have a menu of sorts to override dither/digital output vs what you need as conventional track 1 selection

I will look at this to see if this is the culprit....
Thanks,
IMO, the first thing to do is to look at the RF waveform(i.e., "eye pattern", "HF") to see what the laser is actually seeing. You can have a substantial amount of waveform disturbance going on & still have the player read TOC. If, for example, the platter motor was having trouble, bearing or servo-wise, with the highest speed, i.e., beginning of disc, it could be not enough to prevent toc or back-winding to beginning, but enough to disturb track jump/track start at that point. Likewise with the laser current adjustment, but this would very much tend to affect different cd's differently. The CDM-9Pro can be a bit of a flakey animal, although still the last great transport Philips made, but odds are good, I'd say, that you just need to get some good lubricant into the platter motor bearing. Prolong Precision Oil is my favorite for this.
