I have fooled around with a few sealed boxes but would like someone to chime in. i am currently using a woofer from an old advent 3 dropped into a phase tech pc60. The woofers were both 4 ohm and I figured if the advents could play much higher with a simple xover on the tweeter they would def. work with the steeper filer of the phase tech. working out rather well using the stock phase tech xover. great tweeters in the phase techs but the surrounds on the woofers gave it up and are impossible to find and hard to replace. the box is a little smaller than the advent though, and I read tests showing a bass hump indicating maybe too small of a box for the advent.
I think I can get flatter response by using a bigger box, but I also think I could raise the output of the driver as it would be less damped. less damping = more movement of the cone right?

As you increase the size of a sealed box, the Q of the high pass filter that the box creates goes down. You ideally want a system Q of somewhere between 0.5 and 1. 1 will give a bit of a bump before the roll-off starts. This gives a fair bit of range in box size, complicated a bit by the fact that damping (unless too much) will increase the apparent size of the box.

Box size is related to compliance which is not damping.
As the box gets bigger resonance will lower but you will actually get less bass rather than more, at least for frequencies above resonance.
Set the box size to get your desired Q, as Planet 10 suggests.

Since increasing the enclosure size decreases the 'bass bump' the small box creates, many have complained that using a large box makes the woofer output "disappear" and the bass becomes thin.
less Q gives more truthful bass sound.
Well that's my opinion.
Q > 0.8 gives exaggerated bass sound and this is especially noticeable on male voice, listen to a good news channel.
Q>1.0 is terrible in my view.
Q between 0.5 and 0.7 seems to suit my listening.
This Q is determined by the box volume of a sealed cabinet.
Or you can cheat a little bit and use a Linkwitz Transform to create an new effective Q.
I have never done this last and can't comment on the quality of the bass sound.
