Shallow speaker design for center channel

Hello,

I am an absolute newbie for DIY speaker building, but necessity seems to have brought me here.

I have a need for a very slim center channel speaker which would be hung below the TV. commercially speaking, my limited options include speakers such as Martin Logan SLM and KEF T301c. These speakers are around 1.5 inch thick and less than 10 pounds. I tried these speakers but the sound quality is just not there. I realize that getting decent low frequency would be tough in this form factor. But given their very high price tag and very limited options, I am hoping for better DIY options instead.

Can you please point me to any designs or considerations that would be similar to a slim shallow speaker but provide a somewhat acceptable sound range? How about a BMR along with a folded ribbon type of a mix? Is that even in the ballpark for such an application?

I did a lot of searching and couldn't find anything specific and so I thought I'd post the question here.

Maybe a hiwave bmr?

Thanks for the suggestion. HiWave looks great - it's less than an inch in thickness which would be ideal for a thin speaker. Is there anyone who have had any experience with this in a shallow enclosure type of a application? I am also wondering if I should still pair in a tweeter (folded ribbon or something else) or if that is not necessary with BMR.

I also noticed a Tectonic (TEBM65C20F-8) which is little less than 2 inches in thickness. I have seen another speaker manufacturer who actually had the back magnet of the speaker be embedded as part of the back plane of the enclosure. It would need to be sealed properly, however, I like this approach to further reduce the thickness of the speaker. Not sure if that would work or not though. I'll keep researching.

DML concept looks really cool. I read up on that a little bit after you pointed me in that direction. Can you please comment on a smallest size of a speaker that would be effective? I tried to find some sort of a calculator or formula but couldn't find anything. The post you provided mentioned that these speakers are probably going to be fairly large. Your speaker looks great, BTW. I am tempted to just order parts to experiment myself. Thanks for pointing out the DML concept. I had no idea about this before.

DML is a highly experimental thing. There're very few commercial products out there for easy clone, and only a handful of enthusiasts sharing their (bizarre) works. And everyone has different requirements and tastes, so different designs are needed. That means, you're very largely on your own.

This thing is very easy and cheap to start, but getting harder when moving forward. To get fully satisfied, I've done 4-5 versions of panels, or maybe more, I forget. (The bright side is the material is all cheap.)

Basic principle is using light and stiff panel, as large as you can. Smaller area also works but lacks LF as you can expect.

It's fun anyway, so feel free to experiment. I've seen people make it as a painting/picture frame hung on the wall. Or a large screen for projector. So it can be very shallow. (Some damping material is needed behind the panel, of course...)

More on the BMR front, I am wondering if this makes sense. I am trying to replicate something like what is in GoldenEar SuperSat speakers. They have what they call two "quadratic planar radiators" along with a couple of midrange and a tweeter. I am wondering if I can duplicate something like that with a couple of BMRs, midrange, and a folded ribbon tweeter. Is that idea even worth pursuing in a shallow form factor? Any help with crossover for this would be great as well.
