Simple Software Low-Pass Filter

Simple Software Low-Pass Filter, Does anybody know if such a thing exists?

I've a couple of passive projects on the go and rather than run simulations I'd like to 'know' how the sub will 'sound' before it's finalised. So, I'd like to play music from my computer through a variable low-pass filter to run tests. If I run a full range signal the sub will invariably sound boxy because there's no damping and it will produce resonances and waves using signals it will not receive once a real filter is installed.

Thanks Rob, but I am unlikely to do that. I agree that I play with a lot of different drivers but the 'science' is not my focus. I dismiss many solutions offered by spreadsheets because unless the system is to be set-up in a field the results are often not particularly relevant. We live in houses with walls and furniture etc, and any number of incalculable variables.

More importantly, the appreciation of sound is largely subjective. e.g. At present there are 8 subs in my apartment. Each sub has its own sound. The 'worst' sub I own is my attempt to mount a 6.5" sub in a 7ltr ported cabinet - it's a disaster on paper and catastrophe on my bench. However, place the unit in its intended location (on the floor, under a desk facing a wall) - it comes to life, producing sweeter, tighter bass than any of the rest.

To better understand my thinking, using virtually no budget, I make stuff out of scrap - just to see what happens. For my next project . . . I've been offered a pair of knackered floor-standers (30 litres) for £5. I've no intention of attempting to restore them to their former glory because I've two drivers from Yamaha YST-SW005's on my shelf. According to Yamaha these things do 30Hz in a 17 litre cabinet . . . Replacing woofers with subwoofers will probably make the concept of mid-range extinct, but I've still got over 10 litres of volume to play with. I can have a sub, a woofer, and tweeter all in the same cabinet - how will that work out?

I'll have a couple of weeks of fun finding out. When I'm done I'll take it all to bits - because I don't need any more speakers.
