Whatever you do, DON'T buy the Jonard Industries DP-140 from Mouser or anywhere else. I had this one for a few months and the cheap plastic trigger broke off, making the device almost useless. This item is a clone of the original Soldapullt model US 140, one of which I purchased over 40 years ago. That original solder sucker is well-worn but still working fine, unlike this new piece of crap that I bought as a spare.
Take care,
Doug

Try the Hozan DS-017. Mine has worked faithfully for many years. Replacement nozzles are not too expensive. Also look at what RS has available.
I bought a "made in Japan" one that has a silicone tip and works great!

That Engineer one looks good (appears to be the same as the one troystg posted above).
I've been using an Edsyn Soldapullt for the last few years and have been more or less happy with it. https://www.amazon.com/EDSYN-PT109-SOLDAPULLT-Desoldering-Hand/dp/B004IOS54C/ref=sr_1_8?crid=1NYTV0BEKIX99&dchild=1&keywords=edsyn+soldapullt&qid=1612295743&sprefix=edsyn+%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-8

The Engineer unit is excellent, built like a tank. My only gripe is that it's a bit too short for those with long fingers or big hands
Just posting a follow-up; this thread spurred me on to contact Jonard Tools about the broken tool, and they will be sending me out a free replacement unit. So at least they stand behind their products.

That's good, but I see that tool, not having enough volume as the larger one. I think it makes a difference in ability to remove. Maybe the smaller size is better to get into tight spots where the bigger tool might be a hinderance. best yet have both types 🙂
I still use the original silver soldapult. I contemplate getting an auto but the soldapult is so much easier to service.
happy de-soldering

I've been quite happy with my Jonard DP-200. I'm on my second one. The first wore out after about 18 years of use. I put a fair amount of use on my soldering tools.

In an informal desoldering contest at work, a Soldapullt DS017 was able to keep up with a Pace desoldering station. We were replacing thousands of axial ceramic caps that had been damaged by improper lead bending.
Had mine 12 years and still going strong.
I think it was from Maplin (sadly gone now)
I would go for a good reputable dealer like RS Components or Farnell.
A good mod I found is a little silicon tube over the end as it seals around holes better than the hard tip. Works well for me.

I have two tools for removing solder. The first a, Precista Solder sucker is 30+ years old and still has the best performance of a manual sucker. it can generate enough high vacuum suction to clear a hole in a multilayer ground plane hole. They have not been made for many years. However for a recent project (replacing all the stitching transistors in the tuning of an audio analyzer) I got a Thermatronics desoldering kit NEW Thermaltronics DS-KIT-1 TMT-9000S Desolder Kit; Metcal Compatible MX-D001 | eBay and the speed and quality of its output is amazing. The 30 transistors were out in no time and the PCB looked new. Its an expensive commitment but the instrument is also expensive so a valid expense and I have used it many times since.

The DP-100 is just as bad. Internal plastic parts break inside this one too.
Desolder Pump | Jonard
The Edsyn Soldapullt LOOKS very similar to the Jonard but is far better.
The Original Deluxe SOLDAPULLT: EDSYN Inc.
Jonards fail several times a year. Edsyns take several years to fail.

I have used these RS Pro for many years as the tips are heat resilient, but they do bug me as prone to clogging up the nozzle, and the button mechanism wears out over time. Just ordered one of those Engineer SS-02 suckers, looks great provided the tips can hold up to the heat.

Used my new Engineer SS-02 in anger for the first time today. Suction definitely better than the previous one, and it's built like a tank which gives me the warm fuzzies.
But it *is* a little on the short side for the hand. Hopefully once I'm used to it I won't notice anymore....

I finally bit the bullet and bought a Hakko FR301 and it is one of those tools that I've been kicking myself for not buying earlier. Makes removing components from PCBs an absolute snap. Highly recommend it.
