Any suggestions as to where to start modding my CDP-D500? I’ve got 2 one sounds like the soundstage is less open and sort of missing something. Less 3d I’d say . I was thinking of switching out some caps to see if that would help . Both run the 1702 chips . Not sure if changing those out would help . I do like the sound of the other CDP-D500 I have so I’m thinking might be bad caps or resistor somewhere in the other one . Any suggestions on where to start ?? Not sure what brand of caps or which ones I should replace as I’m new to this but have some experience building guitar pedals so I can solder 😎 . Any help greatly appreciated thanks

Welcome to the forum!
I hope you will not attempt to modify the player that is working to your satisfaction - just in case you render it unworkable!
I presume you will have obtained the service manual and will be able to refer to the schematic.
The output stage of a CD player obviously influences the sound, so replacing the electrolytic capacitors there may be a good start.
Anyway, I've given your thread a bump. Hopefully someone who has worked on this model will contribute their expertise.
P.S. The capacitor brand is not as important as using the correct capacitance and working voltage ratings.

Thanks , I’ll start there . I’ve got 2 of these so I don’t mind tinkering with the one that doesn’t sound as good . It may be a weak cap somewhere . Was thinking of maybe replacing the two pcm1702’s with TDA1540’s if I could find some at a decent price . Not sure if that’s a straight up swap or there’s more involved ?
Where’s the best place to order caps n chips from . I’m in Canada 🇨🇦 Wondering if there a place here for that as well

I can't comment on chip compatibility or Canadian stockists, but I can give your thread another bump!

I found some nice pics on a site whose motto is "Infrequent Sound," but don't let that put you off! Roomy enough to swing a cat in there...

To start:
Basically - all audio devices - desolder and re-solder, with minimal solder.
Most DACs run without the following analog output stage. Just add a few capacitors to their analog outputs and connect them to the RCA outputs.
Replace the quartz capacitors with mica capacitors.

In this lucky case when you have two identical devices with audible output difference I would measure them with RMAA and see if any numeric difference can be found.I’ve got 2 one sounds like the soundstage is less open and sort of missing something. Less 3d
The service manuals are available both in hifiengine and elektrotanya but unfortunately the schematics is not included.
But - judging from the photos via Andersonix link - the output stage looks pretty straightforward so you can probably draw the schematics from the board.
