I recently realized an old dream and got my hands on a Sony R1 & D1 combo and they are and play beautiful. Is there anything I can do to prolong its life? Anything I should be obs on or should check or inspect?
Sometimes happens this, you have a hi-end cd player, and you are afraid that it can damaged.
I've never have seen these machine, nor a cd player with KSS-190A.
My advice is if it works, don't manipulate.
About the KSS-190A, the only way of to prevent the ageing of it laser, is not use it . But the laser pickup can be damaged with other "illness", like fungus in the lens.
You can measure the laser power if you can, who knows if somebody manipulated it in the past.
I hope in the following weeks to trying replace a laser diode in a KSS-151A that is electrically similar to a KSS-190a. Stay conect to this forum.

Thx MM. I have been following your posts on replacing it.
Do these laser diodes have a limited amount of burning time or is that not something to be concerned about?
Are the turned on when the machine powered on, or are they only turned on when playing a cd?
And is that the same for the KSS-272? I have a cdp-x 707 as well.

Hi. The laser diode only is powered up when the device is reading or trying to read a disc. The rest of time is turn off. If you see the schema in all cd players, there is pin in the microprocessor that orders power up or down of the laser diode.
The KSS-272A and the KSS-190A share the same metal block where is the laser, the lens and the Opic-Phodiode array. I don't know if the focus lens are the same but I think so. The OPIC-Photodiode array are not the same. About the laser diode, I don't know if is the same, even, I think they can use different laser diodes for the same laser pickup model.
I've seen that the KSS-271A uses a different diode than the KSS-272A.
I haven't built the circuit and the soport for the KSS-151A. When the weather is hot, I get lazy, but I think is more easy to adjust than the KSS-272A, but, who knows...
