I never liked any of those 5.1 homevideo/audio combos. Yesterday I received a free Sony STR-K780 (5x50W RMS or something) in mint condition. I gave it a chance to change my opinion. I factory reset it and tested all channels: it works "better" in stereo mode with "front" speakers output. Even then I cannot believe how dull and weak it sounds as compared to my vintage Proton AM20 or even to a recent DIY LM3886 gainclone (both with comparable power). The lower audio spectrum is quite absent. Do I miss anything or should I just dump (or dismantle) it? Thanks.

If the lower part of the spectrum is missing (and you must confirm by measurement that it is) then either there is a fault, or some setting somewhere is modifying the response.
If you have out of phase louspeakers, the lower ranges will tend to dissapear more than the upper ranges of sound.
Make sure the subwoofer output is disabled and the main outputs are configured for full range operation. This may not be the default setting.

This is it thanks! However, I checked all possible modes (I even read the manual!): the line output to the active subwoofer is always on and cannot be disabled. That thing does not appear to be usable with just two speakers. I hate it.
