they are pretty good . From hear say, the newer amps are not as good as older ones.

I recently repaired a new Soundstream "Van Gough" 75W x 4 channel unit. I was overall unimpressed with the whole thing, they used crappy op-amps and capacitors throughout, insufficient power supply, and skimpy audio stage.
The funniest thing is that they claim it is an audiophile grade unit! 🙂

SS has left the building!
All there products are made in the far east now and the original SS was a US thing and sounded really good and well put together.
Alot of the big brands are doing this now, the eastern tigers roars at the dollar or something like that.
Always buy old skool and if its broke fix it.

Ok. SS used to be good stuff. Back in the day they had stand alone D/A's By Krell I think, and they had bitchen 8 and 10 inch paper coned woofers, which are still the best sounding subs I think I've ever used in a car. Early SS amplifiers were designed by the great pass, and all was well at 120 Blue Revine Rd, Folsom Ca.
Today, RUBBISH!! The company has changed hands countless times, and the stuff is made overseas. Installed, and later un-installed "800 Watt" amplifier running 2 Diamond Audio TDX 10 woofers. Carnage inside the amp. Components EXPLODED taking out parts of the circuit board.. First time I've ever seen the leg of a torroid burn like a fuse.

Soundstream went belly up because their return rate on their amplifiers was near 80%. Why? Because they insisted on using output Darlington devices and had no clue on how to control them temperature wise. A TIP142/147 pair are notorious for themal runaway as are most Darlingtons. Their maps always had turn on/off thump as they used NO muting circuits at all. They also used the main PCB to clamp the output devices to the heatsink. So if you had a faulty device, you had to disassemble the whole amp - waste of time and money. They also used self tappers to clamp these devices, so if you removed the PCB more than once or twice (we had to on many repairs we did) then the hole in the heaysink became oversized and the tapper did not work.
They are now built in Korea together with Precision power, Orion and others. How do I know this? I use the same factoru to assemble my PCBs for my amps.
They all sound awful and use cheap components and typical Korean audio and power supply circuitry

I tell all my customers to by old school amplifiers, as the ones that are made today by the big brands are very very generic sounding and have no passion in there performance at all, very sad state of affairs.
I think some of the Korean amplifiers are good but they are over looked on the whole as the cheapest products they make are what the big US companies want, the dollar is king and quality is a clown in big business terms.
The UK only has one company making car amplifiers and thats it, i suppose the small makers have to charge an arm and a leg to survive over box shifting blue chip brands.
