Hi Folks, Mrs Womble and I are in the process of designing a new lounge room soon to be built on the back of the house, so I get to design a custom AV setup to house our pre-existing gear. Mrs Womble has few requirements other than it be very neat and tidy, and recessed into the wall. So am gonna get a 70 inch TV sized recess made into the wall to take our 46 inch LCD, and a stack of hifi component sized recesses for all the AV gear - all wiring will go straight through the wall into a slim cupboard in the garage for ease of wiring. The only problem is the speakers, currently they are on metal stands which date from my student days, as do the speakers - KEF Coda 7s. I have no interest in replacing them but Mrs W has utterly vetoed the continued use of the stands on the grounds that they are ugly and attract dust - ho hum.
She is most insistant that the speakers get their own alcove and slot into the wall too. This does have attractive benefits, firstly it will be neat, look very slick and will keep the exposed cones out of reach of not-too-distant children so the front port will remain jam sandwich free.
My question is will this sound utterly terrible? Am kinda beyond the whole hifi purist stage, ironic really as when I was into it I was a poor student, now I can afford to indulge I find I have no interest.
The wall will be plasterboard on wooden frame with insulation matting in the void if that helps.

If the sound changes a lot, and you don't like it, you can always return to basics (with stands) and use the alcove for books (CD's or other). Or have a place were to put them for party days.
Since you are still into the making of it , it would be (so) nice to flush mount any speaker cabinet, in the same finish style of the wall . Then when you listen , some little power servos move the speakers off the wall about 1 foot .
If this doesn't work , you can use the motors for laundry ropes , curtains , motorboats for you children ..🙂
