I'm using REW to obtain speaker response measurements and a calibrated SPL meter is required. I have used the RS 33-4050 in the past, but it appears to not want to cooperate after sitting unused for some 10 years. I plan on cleaning the selector knob which seems to be the issue, but it would not hurt to have a backup measurement for verification. Is there a meter obtainable in the US for $50 or so that is "good enough?" What about android SPL meters for the phone, I have downloaded a few, but there is no indication of whether readings are C weighted. Any suggestions on how to obtain good SPL data are appreciated.
These look ok, but I'd go with the Pro for its better accuracy.

?? Most say, though not loud (most users are ignorant). Since most free meters users are trying to show "noise", A is a default, and C (better Z) may be a paid upgrade.

--works OK for me. Really better than a new $49 meter (it rattles and the smoothing is janky); not as good as my 1979 Realistic Needle-meter.

Has A C and Z, is a fine tool. I now like Decibel X (Pro) a bit better, but either is fine.

Is excellent for long-term record of sound level, but I can't find ACZ, their website is helpless, and they now want $2.50 to try (it was free last year). You can set the time-line from 30 seconds to 4 hours; I have not seen any other hand-tool for this. Otherwise, you can do better.

Nice clear display with nice backlight. Calibration seems within a few dB, better than most cellphone "meters", adequate for casual use. Response in "C" mode is flat over most of the audio range. Two "flaws": the head rattles, giving odd jumps in reading; the self-noise level appears to be 38dB SPL, so it will not read very soft sounds, even a quiet livingroom.

Cleaning the selector knob on the Radio Shack Sound Meter worked to fix its erratic behavior and I also looked at some of these apps and found the Decibel Meter by Dmytro Hrebeniuk for $1.99 one time payment to be the cheapest for dBC, could not find a free app for C. A calibrated external meter is necessary to calibrate the app, though, as it was way off in its default configuration.
i believe a spl meter calibrator + a measurement mic is a better choice and more accurate then then a spl meter
What the world needs is a $30 calibrator. Strangely enough, REW with a UMIK-1 microphone claims to not need to be calibrated for measurements. Not sure how this works. I am seeing about 2 dB lower reading with a 1KHz test signal through my 20 year old Radio Shack analog SPL meter.
