I am running these 6J5 tubes in place of 6SN7's in my pre amp, I love the sound but it is very hard to find these that aren't highly microphonic.
So now I am looking to try something similar sounding that is less microphonic,
any advice is appreciated....
I have already tried 6F8G's and like them but, I want something a little more linear....

The "same" triode is found in the 6J5, 6F8G, and 6SN7. The Loktal 7A5 and 7N7 are, respectively, "equivalent" to the 6J5 and 6SN7. Intended for automotive service, Loktal types exhibit lower microphony levels than Octal types.
BTW, the same linear μ 20 triode is found in the Noval (9 pin mini) 6CG7/6FQ7.

If you want a 6J5 type the 2C22 are the best sounding if you can deal with 2 top caps. The 6P5 are very nice too, bit less gain.
But try a KT61. You can put a lot more current through them. 20mA would be good. Or anything from 10mA up. Good tube in triode. Have a look at the threads on 6V6 in triode as well. There are quite a few octal choices, and many more loctal equivalents.

the least microphonic 6j5 tubes I have seen are the metal ones also are the cheaper in the majority of the cases...... the ussr i had some that ring like a bell and others that only did that when zapped but none the less usable for tinkering and good looking also

Get some tube dampers.

How about a 6SN7?So now I am looking to try something similar sounding that is less microphonic,

Maybe a 6N8S? 😀
My basis for recommending the 2C22 and 6P5 is a big shootout I did several years back. They were the two that came out best for sound. I went through several variants of the 6J5 - around 8 or 10 different ones. I'd use the ST shape 6J5G in preference to the straight ones or the metal ones. All this is just for best sound, but as above I moved on to higher current tubes like the KT61 with similar mu and pinout, apart from G2 on pin 4 which needs to be tied to the anode with a 47-100R resistor. More heater current of course.
I don't know what the microphonics issue is - I didn't experience it. Maybe a much more solid chassis? Mine is 4mm aluminium with wooden sides, pretty dead.

Hey guys thanks for all the reply's looks like I have some work to do now deciding on a different tube.
You're going to find tubes out there that say both 6CG7 and 6FQ7 on the glass, so in practical terms there is no answer to that question.
Technically one had a shield, the other didn't. Eventually they made them all the same and labeled them with both numbers. Electrically they are the same anyway except for the shield.
I consider 6J5 superior over 6SN7. It also allows more choices in plate shape than 6SN7. To me the plate shape is more important than glass shape and the black cylindrical plate is better sounding than the ribbed or ladder shape plates to me. The keywords are round and black. Most metal tubes have a round cylindrical black plate inside and cheaper and less microphonic. It's a wonderful tube and I would take it over 6SN7 in a heartbeat even if you have to use an extra socket for two plates.
