In lieu of the other question on this board about the same unit in a closed box. I was curious if this driver was suitable in a dipole box. Actively driven with a sub amp.
Something like in the attached pictures.

Hi, don't see why not, large area, reasonable if not massive xmas (which I'm not a fan of), what made you choose that frame type?
I have Bastanis open baffle speakers. But with closed type boxes and 12 inch drivers. However the manufacturer has the upgrade to 18 inch dipoles. I was curious if I could do something myself...for less.what made you choose that frame type?
Why not a fan? And which 18 inch would be better suited?reasonable if not massive xmas (which I'm not a fan of)
I mean, I'm not a fan of large xmas, I think that has plenty. Large excursion means distortion to me and lots of EQ and power. I think there are better ways ie, surface area, frame type and positioning. I have U frames myself but would be interested to know how that type you picture (what would you like to call them??😉) perform
I think they are called dipoles? Not sure 🙂
The manufacturer I think went to oberton 18 xb 1300 ...but they are quite a bit more expensive. Any reason I have to save money and go for the Obertons?

Yes it is a dipole, but different frame shapes have different names and some names vary Subwoofer Origami
It looks most like a ripole with a single driver. Not a clear name browsing through the subwoofer origami

It does, though I think they have less space behind the cone, to such an extent that a hole is made for the magnet. Also, big advantage to use two drivers opposing each other to cancel cabinet vibrations, it works, I've experimented with something similar.
I'd probably call what you have there an N frame (almost!)

Not really other than the Sigma's much lower Xmax/ peak power handling and maybe the need to damp its HF 'shout' if a high XO point is used.

Thanks! That is awesome news. Because I'm assuming xmax/power handling is not relevant in a medium size roomNot really other than the Sigma's much lower Xmax/ peak power handling.
<100 Hz. Should not be an issue?damp its HF 'shout' if a high XO point is used.

Shouldn't be for 2nd order or higher, though at this low an XO point with a low Qt, OB, it seems like it's almost not worth the effort, cost unless corner loaded in a high gain room.

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback. I'll first explore other avenues open to me...in that case.though at this low an XO point with a low Qt, OB, it seems like it's almost not worth the effort, cost unless corner loaded in a high gain room.
Looking at the efficiency of this particular Eminence driver vs the mentioned Oberton....it is clear that the Oberton is much more useful below 100Hz.

It's not advisable to put a dipole in the corner due to cancellation, but you can put it against a side wall for a useful boost
