Suggestions for bulk SMD purchases for hobbyists?

I was wondering if there are kits of resistors and capacitors in 0402 or larger sizes, as I'm interested in learning dead bug/Manhattan construction techniques. I'm looking for a decent range in values with cheap bulk pricing if such a beast exists. Or do I need to just order 100-1000 pieces of common values?

I would also like to get more parts for the Learning Art of Electronics lab manual, but I think that's probably best pursued with through-hole parts in a breadboard.

Yes, you can get sample kits of smt parts. There are many kinds available. But for experimenting,
you may want all sizes of R and C, so order individual sizes of parts. Always do initial protos with
through hole parts on a solderless breadboard when possible, since it's much more efficient and easy.

You can also buy empty smt books with storage pages and stuff them with higher quality parts yourself.
However, designing pcbs and having them made is today so easy and inexpensive that the traditional
prototype construction is more time consuming and error prone. After all, you'll end up making a pcb anyway.

Yes, kits of assorted values of SMD parts are widely available on eBay or AliExpress in all of the common SMD and through hole types for very little money. The pic shows a couple of examples of through hole and SMD. Be sure to check the values of the parts in the bag or the SMD sample book - some of them have slightly oddball values which may or may not be an issue for you. For reloading a sample book or for high use values, you can buy strips of parts in 100 or multiples - the small bags shown have 200 each of 10nF and 100nF caps. Pricing is about a penny per part for commodity type resistors, capacitors and transistors in 100 pc lots of the same value, doesn't really make any difference whether it is SMD or through hole. An empty sample book is useful for LED's, semiconductors, trimmer caps and pots, etc.

These commodity parts seem to be fine for hobbyist use - the little radio in the background of the pic is about 60% these types of parts. It works very well.

I don't think SMD is suitable for dead bug or manhattan construction as I understand it. I use these boards that are available in a variety of dimensions:

which is pretty equivalent to Manhattan construction.

0402 is really small. 0603 is not too bad, but still very small. I think 0805 is the sweet spot. 1206 is pretty big. The parts are cheap enough you can get a big variety of all types to see what works for you. Hope this helps.
