Hello all. I am grateful as this forum was of great help on my last project.
I have started to design a couple of sets of small speakers for the teenage grand kids. Have decided on the Tang Band w3-1876s for woofer.
I have read that Poly-pro speakers do not need complex crossovers. That they would even be happy with just a cap for the tweeter. This speaker drops off about 10 db from 2k to 4k Hz.
Is this why? And common for poly pro speakers?
As the impedance of the w3-1876s rises with frequency, designing a crossover for an already low efficiency speaker, 76db, would be complex and inefficient with a Zobel network.
Will I need resistors in the tweeter circuit if I use a crossover or a cap to match output levels, as most tweeters are over 85 db?
Any suggestions on crossover or tweeters?

Surely you couldn't have picked a lower efficiency sub driver could you!
Just how small did you want to make this? A pair of sixteen ohm five inch Tang Band subs W5-676SE....... Your pushing nearly Thirty watts of power to the 3" vs, ONE Watt to the pair of five inchers!!
Can you stand a half cubic foot enclosure??? 13.5" X 7.5" X 7.5" ??
At $36 for two drivers to your $33 for the single 3" ??????
I would tend to think this might be a better route than utterly wasting power to such an inefficient god awful driver.

You are correct for the way you are thinking.
1) The kids have plenty of power to get 88db out of these. Their parents would never forgive me if I made a 100db boom box that filled their whole house.
2) My goal was
a)30 Hz at 0db,
b)30hz to 20Khz +- 3db
c)very low distortion (Do not know if I can get this with the TB w3-1876s. They probably do not care anyway.)
d) 0.25 ft^3 That is 10.5 X 7 inch book shelf box
e) $50 each
With this driver I can get everything but c, and maybe even that.
It took me months to find a driver with the right Vas, Qts, and Fs to get these with any allingment.

That looks like the WinISD sim program. I hadn't plugged in your 3" TB.....I see you've been "playing" with re-tuning the enclosure, tweaking Fb and Vb. I find it really interesting how one can "tweak" these two variables to stretch the low-end performance.
Who am I to create havok within someones family?......."Turn down the music!!!!" Your thinking ahead I see.......Dialing down virtually any tweeter........is probably going to have you running tweeters at one third power or more.
Best wishes.

Thanks Rick. We are getting your type of 98 degree weather today. Gogh I miss the constant rain.
Yes I think that 10db is 3.162 to 1, so 1/3 is very close. One of the many programs was WinISD. At first I was just using the formulas and tweeking them. First I had to find a very low Vas speaker. then somewhere between the Butterworth and the Chebychev allignment formulas the output seemed a perfect match to my goals. Then after doing it the hard way I used a few like these and winisd to verify in seconds, weeks of work

Hi,
i am currently thinking about building a mini 2.1 system with two full range speakers for around 100Hz and a mini subwoofer for 50Hz. Did you build the subwoofer, if yes, how are your experiences?
