Hi
I just thought I'd post about a quirky fault I've had with my D700's. The same will undoubtedly apply to D300's, 500's and 900's - and quite possibly others too.
The speaker developed a horrible, distorted buzz, sounding exactly like the voice coil was catching and rubbing. It was identified as the lower 'bass only' driver in one of the cabinets.
I took the driver out to examine it and found that the cone rattled when tapped. The dust cover in the centre of these units is solid and it seemed to be coming from there. I carefully removed the cover and found that a large brass weight is set into the middle of the cover, held in with glue. It had worked loose. I removed the weight and all traces of glue and reset it in place with araldite, totally encapsulating it.
After trying various glues to re-fix the dust cap with no success (polypropylene cone and cap!), I emailed Tannoy support.
They replied saying "We just use wood glue - same as used on the cabinets!" A careful application of Evostick Resin W (UPVA glue) and all is back to normal and working perfectly.
A useful tip if you think that your voice coil is catching. Tricky to spot without careful examination. Great tip about the glue for polyprop cones too! My D700's are now back to their glorious selves again. I do love these speakers!
