My dad had some old speaker cabs from the 70s that were a custom at the time. Anyways, we took them into a local speaker shop in Austin, TX. We were going to have them restore the original drivers (I cant remember what they were), but they talked us into "upgrading" to some JBLs they had just put into another customer's cab and they really liked it.
So right now I have 2 two-way cabinets each with a JBL 125A 8 ohm driver and a Vifa BC25TG15-04 tweeter. Their sound however is not impressive. I prefer my OS MTM speakers in comparison.
I was thinking it could be due to a poor crossover design/implementation, but I would have to take a look at what the guy did to see what the circuit looks like.
What are peoples thoughts on the drivers and tweeters? Should they work together? Should they do fine in a two-way or would they be better off complimented by a midwoofer?
I was previously going to build some corner horns but if I can save $ on drivers and use these instead, then I may look into designing a cabinet and system around them. For what it's worth the drivers look in great physical condition, no visual degradation or misalignment of any sort. They seem brand new. But that's just my cursory glance.

Thanks. Yeah I came across that while searching the woofer. Would my vifa tweeters be interchangeable with the jbl ones in terms of that crossover design? If so I may try the 3 way design he has.
Looking at the woofer's peaky frequency response at 2-3kHz in Troels' article, you could sure use a second order filter on the bass. Simplest would be something like 1mH and a Zobel around 7.5R and 10uF to tame that peak. Looks like it will work on reflex or closed box from the Qts around 0.43.
You must look at the filter, but I'd guess the Vifa soft dome is on a low crossing second order with positive polarity like the original circuit. Not usually hard to adjust an input resistor on the filter for level.
I'd certainly expect this speaker to work much better with a cone tweeter. There are still some around like the phenolic ring tweeter.

On second thoughts, maybe a 1.8-2.2mH bafflestep coil would be better. More in line with most high efficiency 10" drivers. 🙂
1) It's the DCR of the series inductor
Hi and thanks a lot. I guess a better inductor can give lower R ?
i am obsessed by woofers much more than tweeters.2) OK, nothing special
Very good tweeters are all around. Good woofers are very very expensive
Thanks again
