UPC1237 speaker protection

Hi everyone,

I just finish my TDA2050 30W/channel amp and it works very well. Now I am just about to add a UPC1237 chip for speaker protection and here is my problem.

The datasheet of the UPC1237 sais that the overload detection fonction is not avalaible (on pin 1)

Can anybody help me with this.

Is there a external circuit that I could connect to this chip in order to give my amp an overload detection fonction?

Thanks

What they mean is that the overload detection circuitry is proprietory so they can't show it.
Pin one is a switching input that will switch off the relay when it is taken high. It's up to you to design a circuit that will make pin 1 high when there is an overload condition.

BTW Clipping is not understood as overload in the context of these kind of circuits - clipping is simply defined as 'clipping' 😉

Overload protection needs speaker/ic current detection. You have to include a resistor(of small value) either in series with the speaker or the power rails, one on each rail and detect the drop across each. Then use a comparator or opamp circuit.

thank janneman,
Now what will happen if I connect pin 1 directly to the ground.

Pin 1 will be zero volts. The data sheet shows what will happen depending on the pin 1 voltage 😉

See attachment. What does it telll you? Do you know what pin 6 does? (Hint: look at the application schematic...).

I again,

I made a little mistake with my question about the UPC1237. I realise that I look silly... But what I meant was : By connecting pin 1 to the ground I knew that voltage on pin 1 would be 0 volt but will the other fonctions be OK?

BTW I know what pin 6 does ha ha ha 🙂

Thanks again for your input

I have bought a single speaker protection delay circuit board using C1237 HA

From here: Lumin - Single Channel Speaker Protection

In the board uPC1237 Pin1 is terminated through a resistor & a ground connection in the two PCB holes next to the scale pictured

The circuit works fine with Pin1 shorted or not to ground. If you momentarily short Pin1 to +12v then immediately the relay goes off & comes back on with a delay (- after the short is released)
