Upgrading/repair tower speakers...

Hello! I'm new here and posted in the new members forum my intro (admin need to approve first) and needed help to repair/upgrade my old tower speakers. They are labeled "Sony SS-U651AV Acoustic Suspension 3 way speakers". These were part of a out-of-box complete home theater system that, like everything Sony seems to manufacture these days, failed within the first 3 years of use. 🙄 It was replaced with a Harman Kardon AVR 154 to which I connect the video game consoles and LCD TV thru HDMI, cable box thru component, and PC/turntable using RCA.

Now Im a college student so I really cant afford anything too audiophile-istic 🙂violin🙂 although Im a DJ at night so I need something that can output at least digital 320kbps faithfully so I can build my sets without too much hassle.

My current speakers:

Left speaker - missing the tweeter😕😱. The midrage was substituted with a Kenwood car speaker pulled out a car I sold years ago.

Right speaker - at least has the tweeter 😱. Has the other car speaker.

Tweeters: I would like to have some proper tweeters there to get the most out of the system. Goggling the serial number list them as 5cm so I guess those are 2 inch? Actual hole size: 2 7/8 inch

Mid ranges: I would like to get proper 8 ohm speakers since it can get the receiver very hot and I really dont want it to go bust. I read somewhere that you can make them 4 ohm by putting them in serial or something but Im not too sure. They are posted as 10cm or 4 inch. Actual hole size 3 6/8 inch

Woofer: These where repaired couple years ago. The outer ring holding the coil became dust like when you tousched them it became a fine sand 😱. It was probably due the humidity levels but for $15 a pop the replaced said ring and now are running like a champ 😀 So my questions would be:

  • How you measure the speaker? bolt to bolt, outer ring, etc. Like TVs that measure diagonal...
  • Where I can buy replacement speakers? Ebay mostly shows used and car stuff and maybe theres a Monoprice for replacement speakers
  • Would it be worth to repair those or get bookshelf speakers? Keep in mind I have a 12inch subwoofer and my reiceiver is a HK AVR154. My studio apt is 20ft x 10ft.

Im open to any other suggestions. Thanks a bunch for you time! 😀

replacement speakers

I have some nice used drivers pulled from projects I would sell you for a reasonable price or would even take trade if you have any reggae albums or CD's that I dont have.

But you would need to cut the holes for the midranges a little bigger. Really easy if you have a jigsaw.

Pair of tweeters: Foster 8 ohm, 3.125" square. cutout 2.6". excellent condition and sound.
Pair of midrange: Import 8 ohm. poly cones. Like new, used for 2 hours until we switched to paper cones asthetic reasons.

$30 for all + actual cost of shipping. Can send you pictures if interested. Also have all sorts more of speakers / crossovers if you are looking for something different.

Interesting proposition. I do have a quite extensive audio collection on CD that include reggae, ska, 2 tone among other rare and hard to find stuff. Send me some pics of what you have. Im looking foward not doing any major modding but it all depends. PM me details. Thanks for looking!

Hello, just to let you guys know that we went thru and everything went great. Many thanks to "new2tubes" for his time and help 😀

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Midrange hole had to be cut bigger and wires had to be soldered. They don't need to look pretty since I have mesh covers. 45 minutes later and everything was reconnected. 2 hours to re-equalize everything according to posts here and having at least 75% improvement. Another important improvement, heat buildup from the receiver has come down a great deal.

Electronic music at 320kbps and movies sound excellent and looking foward re-connecting some video game consoles I havent used in a while. Thanks bunches!!!
