USB B hole punch
Hi,
I am tired of drilling and filing square holes for my SilentSwitcher USB connectors, and after a long search found a hole punch for exactly this type of hole:
Greenlee PUNCH UNIT-D .500 DIA X .469 FLAT Cat #: 60077UPC #: 783310600770
But I cannot find any online source for it, let alone a distributor in Europe/Belgium.
Anybody knows a European source, or anyone willing to get me one in the USA and send to Belgium?

Farnell UK have a wide range of Greenlee products. Don't they stock that particular punch? If not, they should be able to get it for you.
That's a pretty pricey punch at $250. There nare a number of sources on this side but the shipping will also be $$$. The spec is a d shaped round hole. Is that correct?

There’s one on eBay right now that will ship to Europe. It’s $190 USD.
If you want a square punch for a USB-B Greenlee No. 731 - 1/2" square metal punch set | eBay $45. Looks like a perfect fit for a USB-B connector.
dear Jan, sorry bt I don´t understand your post.Hi,

Checking USB connector dimensions think one would fit in an 8.5 x 3.5 0r 4 mm hole, rounded ends instead of a plain rectangle would be nice but not indispensable, why would you need a much larger (basically half inch) >D< shaped hole is beyond me.
DID see an XLR type socket, sporting an USB connector inside it, but then it would not fit in an XLR hole.
Can you explain the mystery?
Maybe showing what you actually need to fit.
I cut, bend and punch my own chassis and along the years have ordered quite a nice assortment of punches and dies, to be mounted in various bench presses, in this case would order the proper die set custom made and be through with it.
Cheaper than a greenlee set or worst case similar price and way faster and more practical (think 10/15 seconds per hole)
My point being that if you regularly build projects, it might be worth investing in a similar setup.
I think he needs power in which would be the USB-C connector that somehow managed to be just about exactly .5" square for a cutout. Going forward I would switch to a USB C connector even though it is more of a challenge to work with. If you add a USB PD interface chip you can get up to 100W through the connector. Jan could build silent switchers for power amps!! Still, many of us are transitioning between the various types of connectors which is a real PITA to manage. USB A, USB B, Mini USB, Micro USB USB A-3, USB-B 3, USB C, its hopeless.

That´s what has me baffled.
I rechecked USB-C connector dimensions and they state
and all pictures show a rounded ends rectangle hole in case/chassis fitting those dimensions; a half inch D shaped hole looks HUGE by comparison.a USB-C port measuring 8.4 millimetres (0.33 in) by 2.6 millimetres (0.10 in)
Again, the proper punch and die set can punch exactly that, no waste .
In fact rounded rectangle 2:1 sets are standard, over the counter items; as an example I can buy a 9mm:4.5mm size one at any reasonably stocked Industrial hardware shop in Buenos Aires.

Logic says they should be available in Europe!!
Hey, these are Spanish made, and they can make them in any desirable shape:
Punzones y Matrices - Tecnoultiles
maybe too much for a hobby shop, because although they are actually cheaper than any (self contained) Greenlee type punch, one benchtop press can accomodate any of them and provide endless possibilities for chassis fabrication.
To update this thread: what I was after was hole punch for a USB B connector sorry JMF for the confusion, which is the one on the silentswitchers. The required hole size is 11.9 X 12.7 mm (0.470 x 0.5 in).
I did get what I thought was the correct one from Greenlee, which on inspection proved to be a D-shape hole punch ... My bad, hopefully I can use it for BNC connectors and such. Demian I missed you mentioning the D shape. Expensive mistake. I'm getting old ...
Sooo ... still searching for a square one, for 11.9 X 12.7 mm.
Any tips?

Not exactly what you wanted but 12.7x12.7mm is 0.5"x0.5" which might give you more options.
Greenlee remains expensive though.

Yes it's close, in size. And expensive. I have asked my distributor if I can exchange, maybe they are accommodating.
