Using dual supply OPamp ( NE5532 ) with single Supply?

Hello,

Today i connected an NE5532 to +10V on VCC+ and GND on VCC- in an Voltage follower configuration. I used a Potentiometer vor the Input singal. Input and output seemd to be just the same on my Oscilloscope.

So Is there any reason why not use an Dual Supply op amp in an Single supply configuration? 🙄

For anyone whos intresed in Rail voltages the NE5532:
I noted that the output of the NE5532 can get as close as 1V to the Supply rails, but then the singal was Distored and the current draw started to rise by a bit. When i stayed 1,25V away from Rail voltages everything seemd fine.
 
If You use a 0-10V PSU You have 10V Voltage swing on the output minus op-amp voltage drop (except rail to rail op-amps).
If You use a -10-0+10V PSU You will have 20V Voltage swing.
On 0-10V You will have something about 3-4V swing for each polarity.
You double the Headroom by using a Symmetrical PSU, but battery operated devices usually use single supplies...but sure it works with small signals, but perhaps with more noise.
 
Opamps in single supply operation are not an uncommon sight. You'll find them in consumer mic and phono preamps, some headphone amps, in effects pedals and instruments. They require some attention to permissible input common-mode range, filtering of midpoint reference voltage and power-on/off transients, and in general can only ever be AC-coupled.
