I have an opportunity to buy these. there is virtually no information about SS-2800 available online other than they are 8 ohm 90db and i think 3 way. they weigh 35 lbs each. the canbinets are real wood.
i figured the sony's for sure need to be re capped or possibly new tweeters that's why im a little worried about no info being available. it seems like no one has done a project with them. restoing, recapping, or possibly installing new drivers.
i will be using them ultimately (if they sound good) with a cutting edge LHLABS PULSE XFI DAC as source which is dual mono, balanced, femto clock, with external power supply and a mid range amp like marantz or possibly roksan. or maybe even i will buy a very low watt tube amp if i have the cash. i will apprecite any input.
the cabinet on the sony is whats interesting to me, would it be possible to do a completely new crossover + drivers using these cabinets?
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Speaker system that has been developed for solid-state amplifier. In low-pass it is equipped with a 25cm cone type Woofer. The mid-range it is equipped with a 16cm cone type unit (DIATONE P-610). In the high region it is equipped with a 5cm horn type tweeter (Technics 5HH17). Network part is equipped with an independent three-stage switching type switch was in the mid-range and high-range. The enclosure I have adopted a bass reflex system. If you are using a high-density Homogen the plate, the appearance has been finished in the Eurasian teak.
I saw somewhere someone said that the midrange driver is designed by kondo san, is that true? i will buy it in a heart bit.

re" the canbinets are real wood" - looks like veneered chipboard to me;
take some pics of the drivers so we've got an idea of whether they're worth re-using;
my guess - paper cone woofers & tweeters, the woofer will have a too small magnet (Hi Q) for good bass, & probably foam surround liable to decay. Spend your money on good modern drivers & get predictable results

- reasonably flat, but bass rolls off under 150Hz?
- looks like the woofers have impregnated paper surrounds, it's the mids that have the dodgy foam

Hi,
The cabinets are a poor starting point for any quality project.
Having said that, they look quite interesting for low-fi stuff.
Much worse has been foisted on the world.
rgds, sreten.

thank you guys. i asked the seller to send me some pictures of the drivers. he said that the grill is stapled but he will try to get it off.
about the real wood cabinet, just by looking at the pictures, you are almost certainly right. im thinking maybe real wood was reserved for the top of the like SS-3300 model and this model is only mdf or something like that.

why is the cabinet a poor starting point? im thinking that the most hassle for a beginner. I mean there is no way im gonna be even remotely acceptable at anything woodworking anytime soon, but having a cabinet i can do alright dealing with crossover and drivers .... ofcourse, im not telling, im asking. thats what imagined!
Keepers ....
A bit late to the party but .....
I have had 100s and 100s of vintage speakers of all sizes and prices and my Sony SS-2800s are keepers for me. They sound great and are very efficient for a small bookshelf. They are very well-built with high quality parts - 2" voice coil and huge AlNiCo magnet on the woofer, huge air-core coils on the crossover. Ideal for for a low-to-mid powered system.
I recommend replacing at least the 3.3 and 4.7 MFD caps to ensure the tweeter is protected from low frequencies.

Hi,
The speakers look quite interesting. Should be used on their
sides and appear to be mirror imaged. Ditching the drivers
and crossover and reusing the boxes is a very bad idea.

They are interesting. Very high efficiency reflex three way.
And it does look like they have a some version of the 6" Diatone P610 made by Mitsubishi for the last 50 years as midrange. Those drivers are fullrangers quite sought after by people in the know. Usually valve amplifier fans.
Very light construction, maybe AlNiCo magnets. Transparent dustcaps. The surrounds can sometimes be made of leather.
Naturally, I'd like to see the crossover schematic. Might be surprising.
