Hi all,
Im looking to build a sub enclosure for PA use with the aim of reproducing dubstep notes down to 30hz.
The void v18-1000 driver is very well priced in the UK at £230 at the moment, and its a monster with massive output-
Void Acoustics V18-1000 18" 1000w AES Driver 8 ohms 230.00 IN STOCK (2 Aug 2013)
5" VC!!!
anyway, the fs of 34.5hz limits its use in a ported box to above my target- can anyone suggest a design that would get me to 30hz with reasonable output?
size matters, but not too much, as long as it can get through a standard doorway. Power isnt much of a problem.
Xoc1's th18 gets to 35hz, but I dont know how suited to this driver the design is, or if a 30hz note would have to be high pass filtered.

I dont know of any designs that will get you flat to 30hz, however, right off the bat I'll point at the HOG scoop as thats listed as a reasonable driver for the cab
Hog Scoop
Its my experience that if you are trying to hit 30hz at high output levels, you need to have more than "a sub enclosure".
If you're in the UK, have you heard of Vivek's night SYSTEM?

Sine 143- yes, that's the kind of effect I'm after. I haven't found any FR curves for the hog- is it a tapped horn? Horn path looks long, but not that long.
Dub-Sub
Hi,
A Dub-sub suggestion:
Place this preferably only single folded TH(See the Picture) ~5-5.5 m in front of the Main Speakers if no signal delay is in use. If placed at a wall =1xPi (Sr) for >130dB SPL performance at 30 Hz, the sub must be used with conjunction of a signal delay for the Main Speakers.
IMO: Dub-Sub requirements:
Cross brace all the internal Air-ways using 18mm high grade Birch Ply and brace further by using >= 1” rounded Dowels at every feet of the internal section lengths. Cover at least the first third length of the internal walls counted from the throat with >= 1/2” Cotton Felt.

Nice! Could almost serve as a HT sub.
What do the impulse response and spectrogram mean, compared to what you can hear in real life?

Thankyou Bjorno!
Delay is the only option as speaker placement is dependant upon venue, so this is a given.
The horn you summed looks awsome, but the mid-bass speakers will be more capable if not pushed much below 100hz, (2xjbl 2204) this leaves it too tight for the tune you propose. I wouldn't mind if the horn was tuned 2hz higher, but this is still leaving alot of 'mess' that would need to be eq'd like crazy!
Also, this design would need to be 2 separate subs each capable of going under the main speakers in some way.
Would this be considered a qwtl? If so, would it be better to mount the driver 1/3 of the way down the horn path to reduce ripple?

Ok, so ive found this-
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/190635-th-18-flat-35hz-xoc1s-design-6.html
post 60 in the above link has a simulated response for the Void v18-1000 against a 18 sounds 18lw2400, showing the 18lw2400 as basically higher output but rolls off the tiniest bit higher.
Having investigated this driver, its the same price for me, so this is a possible alternative, but this configuration is only really holding down to 39hz. I could handle a roll off at 33hz, but this is just a bit too high.
I wonder if I could build this and add a removable mouth extention to get me that bit further?
I still have to deal with the 35hz fs, but was under the impression this is irrelevant in a horn- as tqwtl designs play well below fs.

Bjorno-
is that horn 5.5m long then? This would be too tall for my application, and as mentioned in my last post- 1 driver per cab.
Would be interesting to see what could be done with a 4ft (1220mm) dimension limit on the depth (ie standard panel width 8x4 sheet)
and
2ft 1 and 1/2inch (ie 644mm) total width (ie half the width of a 4ft wide sheet + the thickness of the side pieces - the thickness of a tablesaw blade width loss)
internal dimentions being 606mm x 1181mm for the base and height whatever you like up to say 2000mm
Height would be the variable for horn length. -mega easy to build!!! - 1 cut for each side panel (height only) and a strip for all the internal sections that you cut to length as you go!

somthing like this I just knocked up. (to scale)

I get 4.5m path length for this drawing. Assuming like the tqwtl designs, the output can be traded for extension, then reducing the taper will give me a lower tune?

Ok, been thinking about it and I don't think I'm going to get what I want from a th design- it will end up too big or not go low enough for my application ( though I think that the 4x2ft idea is a good one for another day)
6th order band pass is a passibility, maybe a 6th order ppsl- (although this will require a single cab for both drivers)

I bring up SYSTEM because the Hog scoops are literally what they use at that show. I believe they have 8.
What drivers though? Can't deny that they look like they are working, perhaps I'll go and see them run it live at there next gig to confirm. For now its gotta be cold hard math and data.
Can't find much in the way of measurements on the hog scoop so far.

If you want measurements you can model in horn resp yourself, someone already did all the hard work and posted it in the forum comments on it.
I dont know what driver, but since you only asked about 1 in particular (assuming your budget is majorly constrained) I only confirmed that it was a recomended driver for the cab.

It's ok, I found a fr chart on a similar driver- cant remember where it is now, but its very respectable! 40 he corner frequency with a gentle roll off at the top and bottom.
ok, possible mis-calculation.
A TH horn would need to be 2.85m long to tune to 30hz.- is this correct?? if so, the TH proposed by bjorno (post 4) is perfect.
Does the taper of the horn increase the tune freq as in a DTQWT?
Driver would likely be the 18sounds 18LW2400 now. (wider bandwidth)

Sine- I've tried to download hornresp, but my windows 8 laptop doesn't seam to like it. I'll see if I can track down a friend with a computer.
