Hello everyone. My name is Dave, and I'm new here (1st post) and a noob to audio. I recently built two of the Parts-Express 18" sealed subs and really enjoy them. I now want to try building a 21" sub to go along with my two sealed 18"s. Not sure if the 21" will be sealed or ported. I've looked through the 'Subwoofer' forum at diyaudio, but didn't find much in the way of builds. Here's where I'd love some guidance:
1. Can you recommend a decent 21" driver? B&C? I really can't afford any more than $700 for the driver.
2. Is it okay to pair my sealed subs with a ported 21" sub?
3. Can you recommend a thread or website that shows the dimensions for the enclosure?
4. Has anyone built a Marty type 21" sub?
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! I apologize in advance if these questions have already been discussed and answered a 100 times already.
Thank you,
Dave

1. I can't personally, but there are a bunch out there
2. It is, though you may have to adjust in room placement etc to find what works
3. Wholly dependent on the driver
4. "Marty type".... people have built plenty of ported enclosures long before Marty needed a box that used handy panels
Why not a 3rd or 4th sealed 18 instead?
I have read mixing sealed and ported designs can cause issues between where the sealed subs roll off and the ported sub rolls off.

What is your mission ?
I do realize at this point in time "sub" is just a generic term. Back in my day,
a sub-woofer" was an ultra low frequency device meant to be used under regular woofers. Extension as low as 20hz was almost mandatory.
Are you seeking sheer output, or true low frequency extension ?
I only ask because most "pro" style 21 inch drivers are going to give you
F3's somewhere in the 30's.
21LW1400 Eighteen Sound 21LW1400 21" Subwoofer Speakers - Eighteen Sound 21LW1400 21" speakers - Eighteen Sound 21LW1400 is a 3,000 watt extended low frequency woofer that has goes down to 24Hz. Eighteen Sound 21LW1400 woofers are available here. 18

Agreed. Some of the Fane and P-Audio 18" drivers have resonance below 30Hz and around 100dB efficiency. This will undoubtedly blow you out of your pants 😛
21" equivalents more-so for a lot more brass and space, if you can get them.
If you want extension (to re-arrange your internal organs at 128 Beats Per Minute) then I guess the car type speakers can do that. Not anywhere near the efficiency, but dig lower.
Watching with (SM) interest 😀

It occurs to me that the two 18" subs you have in an isobaric bandpass ported enclosure might do what you want?
Is it volume or depth you want (still on an SM theme 🙂 ).
P.S What 18" drivers do you have? I looked on Parts Express and could not find an an18" sealed sub kit, just the box. if you have some high resonance drivers, they may not be giving what you want. Anything around 40Hz won't do the biz.

PE sells RS and UM kits in 18". I have a pair of UM18s as 7cf end tables, each powered by a bridged XTI2002 and DSP taken care of via MiniDSP. The sound is impressive, but I wish I still had room for 2 more. 🙂
I would make the recommendation of adding more of the same subs. Having 3 or 4 of the same sealed subs that you can place in the room is likely the ideal choice.
What you may be looking for is more very low frequency bass, which sealed designs don't naturally produce much of but are capable of doing with the right signal. Consider looking into equalization or Linkwitz-transforms. It may be the frequency response that you're not quite satisfied with. A bit of EQ in the right spot can make a subwoofer sound much more powerful.

Hi Y'all,
How about the MCM 55-2985 21" woofer for a low cost woofer? There have been a number of threads on that one, but the T/S parameters seem to be questionable. MCM Audio Select 21'' Die Cast Professional Woofer - 800W RMS | 55-2985 (552985) | MCM Audio Select

Based on the specs and reviews, I would say this is also one to avoid.Hi Y'all,

Hi Face,
Just based on the price: 4ea. in an infinite baffle... $500.-- ...attic (or so)?

Compared to the JBL 5-15 which has a volume displacement(sd x xmax) of 12397 vs 12138 MCM, I would lean towards the JBL. Especially when the JBL is less cumbersome and half the price, $70 vs $140. JBL GT5-15 15" Single 4 ohm GT Subwoofer - Sonic ElectronixHi Face,

A friend of mine build at 21" sub for his home system and it seem to my ear kind of flabby and didn't go as low or sound as tight than his LAB12 sub in a 3.3 cu ft box.
These are just my impressions, not a scientific study.
I should also add that it looked cool as hell in his family room!!!

I'd seriously just go with more 18"s. 21"s give you more cone area, but for home theatre use, you can get more displacement (needed for 20Hz and below) with other size drivers.
For just going as loud as possible, in a permanent install, then maybe I'd look at something like the 18Sound or B&C 21" subs.
For anything portable, 18" or smaller, unless you've got some big blokes to move the cabinets for you. I have a single 21" driver in my PA system, and I curse it whenever I need to take it anywhere.

First off, I want to say thank you to everyone that replied to my questions. I really do appreciate the help. I read over your suggestions. It appears my best bet is adding more of the 18" sealed subs I already have (I'm using the Dayton 18" Reference series HO drivers). Several of you asked what I'm looking for. I want to go a little lower in frequency response. I still need to purchase the MiniDSP UMIK-1 so I can start learning REW. Right now I'm running the two 18's that I have with an INUKE6000DSP. I've not yet played with the parametric EQ yet on it.
From what I've read of your replies, it sounds like I really need to run some sound tests first with REW, then work on trying to EQ, and then maybe purchase another one or two of the 18" kits. Am I on the right track here?
Again, thank you for your help with this!
Dave

Hi dasa2131,
Looking @ Post #17 I think you are on the right track. Getting the UMIK, and getting more familiar w/ REW are two items on my own short list.
You do not necessarily need to add another 18" sub. Take a look at the Geddes approach to using multiple subs. You may be better off adding a smaller sub w/ its own build in subwoofer amplifer w/ phase and level adjustments.

It would also be interesting to know what frequency/level you are shooting for.

That JBL driver has a Qes of 0.76.
If someone can find a way to knock off that motor and put on a stronger one... 🙂
Other than that, a couple of them in OB use might be nice.
Not a bad guess, given the data. But you might be missing out on a whole lot of fun. It works well if used right, like with an 18" midrange. 😀Based on the specs and reviews, I would say this is also one to avoid.
