In the past few months ive been seeing alot of 'Waterproof' headphones on the market. Apparently theyre really quite terrible. I was wondering how would one go about making the headphones water proof.
My thoughts are:
1.Have a molded earplug that seals the ear and fits over the speaker.
2. Seal the speaker with thin latex.
Im not looking for massive amount of quality just the ability to swim laps with them without worrying about them shorting out or giving my ears a sharp voltage.

What do you use for the waterproof radio or music player?
I have recently started to lap swim again myself so I'm interested in this topic as well.
My understanding is that all of these are limited in frequency response due to the waterproofing material. They end up being suited for talk radio, books on tape rather than music.

There is a waterproof ipod casing made by i think H2audio is the brand name. I saw it on Amazon. Apparently the casing is good, but the head phones are ****. I figured condoms or latex would do well but i thought about making a mold of my ear and putting it on a seal around the headphone.
Personally, I'd have serious reservations about making a mould of the inside of my own ear unless I knew exactly what I was doing and had the right stuff for the job. It could go irreversibly wrong in a big way!!!
You can buy custom made fitted earplugs for motorcyclists which could possibly be adapted - they are quite expensive though - circa £50 IIRC but aren't designed to be waterproof.
Why not try a set of H2O headphones - they are only £25. If they are rubbish, maybe you could adapt the housing?

Ordinary polythene shheting wrapped fairly tightly (but no so tight that it resonates) makes a surprisingly small difference to the sound of loudspeakers.
I haven't tried it with headphones, but see no reason why it wouldn't work OK. The cable 'gland' could be formed using silicone and a cable tie.

I don't know how much they cost, but, find an audiologist that does in-ear hearing aids. They have to mold a shell for them, you could probably get them to, somehow, insert a pair of earbuds into the molds. These would fit perfectly 🙂. I'd be interested in 'hearing' how they turn out if you try this!

Searching stores recently, i found a silicone gel that your suppose to put over your ear to create massive sound reduction and also to keep water out.... i started to think about this project. Im going to try it out..hopefully it won't shock me too bad if it doesn't work out but it won't be the first time.
If I were you I'd simply use an earhpone that has a water-resistant membrane (plastic or metal), and seal the back of the earplug with silicone so that the electrical part is away from water.
