I took my old Sony XM-2020 car audio amp apart and was surprised to find what appears to be a LM-3886 style 11 pin chip amp clamped between an intermediate heat sink and a clamp plate. There are two of them (I presume in parallel to allow 4ohm operation). The amp is marked 20 to 20 kHz 0.5% THD 20 watts rms. I power it with a 19 volt smps brick from a laptop (yes, exceeds 16 volt rating of caps) but it works fine and gets me close to 30 watts I think - not that I ever run it more than 10 watts. Here are photos of the top side and underside. You can see the two flat black chips at the top edge of the board where the intermediate heat sink clamps to the finned case. This amp actually sounds really nice for a class AB. In a comparison with my class D TI TPA3116D2, it is close but lacks the detail and sparkle on the top end, and the bass isn't quite as deep. But overall, a very nice amp for full range drivers. If anyone can tell me what the chips are that would be appreciated. Does Sony make their own or are they using another manufacturer's chip?
