Ok,
I really really do not want to lay out my own board, and build from scratch a new DAC. I would like to a) mod an existing board/kit/DIY project (not really...) or b) just jump on board with a diyAudio design/board or a "commercial" product/kit/board...
Most of the Chinese boards that I have managed to stumble across seem to be simple implementations of the baseline "eval board" schematic(s).
What I think I am looking for is: CS84XX -->DF--->PCM1704--->whatever (i'll rip that out anyhow - analog part = no brainer for moi). I'd like to find something where someone spent some time on the input /clocking/PLL, the isolation of the sections/cleaning up the edges, maybe even highspeed opto isolation (asking for too much?), and at least differential DAC chips... paralleled would be nice, but not essential.
I'm not convinced of the sonics of the newer chipsets from TI, since I don't yet know how it works...
But if anyone can suggest some projects mentioned here that embody at least some of the above, if not all, that would be superfabuloso, or outside websites with boards/kits/etc that seem appropriate too...
What I would like to avoid is what I have now, which is the CS8412 "flying" above where the original surface mounted receiver chip was, and wirewrap wires looking like a hydra going back to the board... avoid that or worse... 'cause then it starts to look better to start from scratch...
Any input would be appreciated!
Oh, if there isn't one, and you think you might like to participate in a diyAudio or outside diyAudio effort to make such a thing, a 'few-holds-barred DAC', and have something to bring to the party, please let me know... email is good.

You can take a look at my stuff if you care. I hope you do not want to sell "modded" version of somebody else's board as your own commercial product. Right?
I would never ever use another person's or company's product or designs without a written agreement.

I would put my bet on TentLabs 1704 DAC with tube output. For now Guido only sells the complete DIY CD player kit, but probably over the next few months he will offer the DAC module separately..
www.tentlabs.com/Products/diycd/index.html
haven't heard it yet, just my two cents.

I was grumpy yesterday. I apologize.

Is the 1704 pin compatible with the 1794? I'm quite happy with my RAKK DAC from kandkaudio.com in the USA and they'll also sell you a Tent XO-DAC.

I have no idea!!
What some people have said on the thread regarding the ebay DACs, is that the implementation counts, and things like grounds and bypassing may not be done properly, or to best effect.
Of course imo the opamps need to be changed out to some other types, but that's not a big deal. Although one would do well to check with a scope for stability.
They do use a lot of vregs it seems...

In fact I've used but with a tube output stage.I have no idea!!

Right now though I am on holyday so I can not give you photos or other information, but I can tell you that I am very pleased with how it sounds.

Hi Bear,
I like your idea. But I think if you will go to "the best", you must do it yourself. The only way you can check the quality. Or pay a lot for a commercial dac. An I/V stage is not a problem. a few good designs can be found on this site.
And if you will built one, you can do it without a pcb, hardwire is a
possibility. So, I like to read what you will do.

As of right now, I'm doin' nothing!
I grabbed a cheapo ebay Chinese dac with good chips very inexpensively, and tried it. It played. Nothing to write home about. Not up to the standard of my PCM63 based DAC... but who knows what might emerge if the 5532/4 opamps get changed out.
Hard to know what sort of stand alone DAC is going to be good today - too many chipsets to chose from, to many boards, too many, too many, too many.

I went with a PCM1794 ebay dac..... changed out the op amps and output caps and removed some filters....
Personally I love it.... but I am now curious about the Wolfson's and ultimately the Sabres.... I think there is never just one DAC, its about the adventure....
Its like wine... Is it the most expensive that tastes the best? Is it from a specific country or region?
Ultimately its about experience, so I just started on this adventure and probably need to taste some vintage wines like the pcm63 or pcm1704 or go with something like a syrah and try some new stuff like the ess sabre.....
Start cheap and build up experience and pallet, that's just how it is......

Yes... This Looks really good!
Has anybody heard this Two Jundac DAC?
I'd be very interested in your opinions.
Cheers
